Other factors to consider

If you want to use a Diners Club card to boost your Velocity point balance, make sure you consider the following factors:

  • Card acceptance. For dual accounts, the World Mastercard can be used in more places than the Diners Club charge card, but earns fewer points per $1 than the Diners Club charge card. For example, with the personal dual card account, you earn 3 points per $1 spent with the personal Diners Club card, and 1.25 points per $1 spent with the Mastercard. This would work out to be 1.5 Velocity points per $1 and 0.83 Velocity points per $1 respectively.
  • Diners Club surcharges. Many businesses apply a higher surcharge for accepting Diners Club cards, which could be as much as 4% of the total transaction cost. Make sure these surcharges don’t outweigh the benefits you get from your rewards.
  • Account structure. Diners Club charge cards work differently to credit cards. You’re required to pay back the entire balance of your charge card account every month by the statement due date and penalties apply if you don’t. If you want the flexibility of carrying a balance, a credit card that’s linked to the Velocity program may be a better option.
  • Annual fee. Diners Club cards usually have an annual fee ranging from $135 to $389 for personal accounts and $95 o $249 for business accounts. Make sure you consider whether or not the benefits of a Diners Club card would outweigh this cost before you apply for one.
  • Other account fees. Some Diners Club card account holders are required to pay an additional fee to be a part of Diners Club Rewards. The rewards program fee is included in the annual fee for World Mastercard accounts. Again, make sure this fee doesn’t contradict the value of your rewards.
  • Complimentary extras. Diners Club cardholders can access the Citibank Dining Program to receive a free bottle of award-winning wine at selected Australian restaurants. You’ll just need to use your Diners Club card to pay for the meal. These accounts also feature complimentary insurance policies such as international travel insurance and purchase cover. Other travel benefits include free airport lounge access at over 500 international airport and member lounges.

The Diners Club Rewards program offers a range of competitive benefits, including high earn rates on the Diners Club charge cards. While the ability to transfer your points to a Velocity account could be handy, there are other frequent flyer credit cards that offer more competitive points per $1. Make sure you compare a range of options to find a product that suits your needs and maximises your rewards before you apply.
