Compare credit cards from Australia’s largest customer-owned bank

The name ‘Heritage Bank’ is a recent addition to the Australian financial services landscape. The Darling Downs Building Society and the Toowoomba Permanent Building Society joined forces in the 1980’s, and in 2011 the joint venture was rebranded to become the financial institution we now know as Heritage Bank.

Heritage Bank is now the largest customer-owned bank in Australia. As a mutual society, every customer is a member, and every member owns a share of the bank. Heritage Bank members continually gets access to credit cards with great deals and rates, while communities all around Australia get a fair go by getting access to financial services through Heritage Bank’s Community Bank Centres. Heritage Bank is a champion of the notion of a ‘community bank’.

Types of credit cards from Heritage Bank

Heritage Bank offers credit cards in the low rate, classic, and platinum credit card categories. Compared to other credit card providers, Heritage Bank credit cards don’t exactly fit with what we’ve come to expect. They offer a low rate gold credit card, for example, which also has no annual fee. Read more about the different types of Heritage Bank credit cards below.

  • Low rate credit cards

Low rate credit cards can be an option for you if you plan on paying back when you spend on the card over a couple of months. Usually, these cards come with an annual fee and ‘up to’ interest-free days on purchases. The Heritage Bank Low Rate Gold Credit Card doesn’t offer any interest-free days on purchases, but you won’t pay any annual fee to own the card.

Learn more about Low Rate Credit Cards
  • Standard credit cards

Whereas low rate credit cards are just suited to ‘revolvers’ — people who just make the minimum monthly repayment — standard credit cards are mid-level products that are suited to most types of borrowers. The annual fee is a little higher than low rate credit cards, but sometimes banks will sweeten the deal by waiving certain fees in the first year you have the credit card.

  • At a branch. Take your Heritage Bank credit card statement to your nearest Heritage branch and make a credit card payment using cash or EFTPOS.

How do I register for Heritage Bank online banking?

Online banking makes it easy to manage and review your account so you can keep an eye out for fraudulent use and make payments to other accounts. How do I get an additional card for a family member?

You can request an additional credit card for a family member when you apply for a Heritage Bank credit card online. If you’re an existing Heritage Bank customer, you can add an additional card to your account by completing and sending in an additional Visa card request form, which is available from the Heritage Bank website.

How is my Heritage Bank credit card protected from fraud?

Whether you’re shopping online or over the counter, rest assured that your Heritage Bank credit card is protected from unauthorised use. When shopping online your account is protected by Verified by Visa, which is an extra password you have to enter to complete online transactions.

Online transactions are also protected by the Visa Zero Liability Policy. This policy gives you a money back guarantee if you’re the victim of credit card fraud. The Visa Zero Liability Policy also extends to transactions made over the counter. This includes contactless payments using the Visa payWave feature and the Cash by Optus payment method.

Additionally, your account is monitored in real time for fraudulent transactions. If a transaction shows up that doesn’t fit your usual spending patterns, Heritage Bank will attempt to contact you to confirm the transaction. In some cases, if you can’t be contacted, a hold will be placed on your account preventing further use of the credit card.

Who do I call if I think someone is using my Heritage Bank credit card without my permission?

If you believe someone is using your credit card without your permission, call Heritage Bank, and you may even need to speak to the police. The same applies if your Heritage Bank credit card is lost or stolen. You need to call the bank right away so your card can be blocked.
