Key takeaways

  • Dental care is available in most pet insurance policies but it’s not always included as standard.
  • Dental insurance can cover your pet for treatment for; removal of teeth, gingivitis and more.
  • Some treatments regarding teeth are covered under other categories in your policy. For example, a fractured tooth may be covered under accidental injuries.

How does pet insurance cover dental treatments?

Simple Extraction

Dental illness cover

This can help pay for dental illnesses your dog or cat has such as gingivitis, abscesses and tooth removal. It's often only available as an add-on. Only a handful of insurers offer this type of cover and, in most cases, you'll see it referred to as dental illness cover.

Pet vaccine

Routine care

Routine care is usually an optional add-on with most pet insurance policies and covers your pet for some basic preventative treatments like teeth cleaning. It also covers things like desexing, general health checks and vaccinations, but it doesn't cover dental illnesses.

What can dental insurance for pets cover?

Pet dental insurance policies can cover you for the following:

  • Gingivitis
  • Abscesses
  • Tooth removal
  • Dental diseases resulting from infection
  • Retained deciduous teeth
  • Cavities
  • Tooth fracture

For a full list of inclusions, be sure to read your product disclosure statement (PDS). This will clearly outline what your pet insurer covers, under what category and if it’s included as standard or if you need to purchase it as an optional extra.

What does pet dental insurance not cover?

You'll generally find that the following treatments are never covered by any pet dental insurance policy:

  • Cosmetic dental procedures
  • Orthodontics
  • Root canals
  • Odontoclastic resorptive lesions (one of the most common dental issues in cats)
  • Other oral treatments not listed above

Hi Yvonne, All the plans listed here include some dental cover, but every policy differs in what’s included, and no policy has utterly comprehensive care — all include limits on totals payable, for instance. If you pick a provider and get a quote, you’ll see much more detail on what applies for your pet. Hope this helps.
