Our verdict

The Amex Platinum Card offers 150,000 bonus points, a yearly travel credit and lounge access for a $1,450 annual fee.

The Amex Platinum Card offers a lot of value to big spenders who pay their account in full each month. It’s linked with the American Express Membership Rewards Program and offers a high earn rate of 2.25 points per $1 on most purchases – plus 1 point per $1 for spending with government bodies like the ATO. The bonus points offer also gives you the chance to collect 150,000 Membership Rewards Points – enough for $750 worth of shopping at David Jones, based on details publicly listed on the Amex website.

With the ability to transfer points to 12 partnered airline programs – including Qantas and Velocity – it’s also a good option for points chasers who belong to multiple frequent flyer programs, including those that aren’t directly linked with a credit card in Australia. While complimentary travel insurance and lounge access are common for platinum cards, perks like the Global Dining Credit Benefit of up to $400 per year, the $450 travel credit and Amazon Prime subscription benefit help set this card apart.

  • American Express is not as widely accepted as Visa or Mastercard
