How InsureandGo handles pre-existing medical conditions

Unlike some insurers that provide a "safe list" of automatically covered conditions, InsureandGo uses a real-time medical screening tool to assess every condition individually. This approach often results in a more tailored policy that offers excellent value for money.

FeatureAssessment Detail
Automatic CoverNone; all conditions must be declared.
Assessment MethodOnline or phone-based medical questionnaire (approx. 5–10 minutes).
Cover ScopeConsiders all conditions, including asthma, diabetes and heart conditions.
Wait PeriodsConditions diagnosed or treated in the last 2 years must be declared.
ApprovalMany conditions are covered for no extra cost after screening.

How does InsureandGo Travel Insurance cover Covid-19?

InsureandGo is one of a growing list of providers that offer some cover for Covid-19. Here are some of the main benefits you'll find under its Silver and Gold policies:

  • Overseas medical expenses, including emergency medical, surgical, hospital, ambulance and repatriation costs where necessary.
  • Cancellation or trip disruption costs if you, a close relative or a travelling companion are diagnosed with Covid-19 after purchasing the policy.
  • Additional travel and accommodation expenses incurred after departure where you need to catch up to your original schedule.

If you want to compare how other insurers handle Covid-19 claims, we've outlined some of the providers that cover pandemic-related expenses.

What policies do InsureandGo offer?

InsureandGo has three different plans to choose from: Bare Essentials, Silver and Gold. You can purchase these plans either as a Single trip policy for travel within Australia or for International travel. Further to this, InsureandGo also offers separate policies for cruise travel.

Here are some of the key insured events you can expect from a policy:

Luggage

Bare Essentials

Single Trip (International)

Passport

Silver

Single Trip (International)

Travel plane luggage passport

Gold

Single Trip (International)

The insurance is underwritten by Europ Assistance Australia Pty Ltd and comes with a cooling-off period and excess.

The cooling-off period is 21 days which means if you decide the policy is not suitable after all, you can cancel and receive a full refund, provided you haven't made a claim and your trip hasn't started. The standard excess is $100 and is the amount you're required to pay when you make a claim. You can pay an additional premium to waive the excess or reduce your premium by doubling the excess.

"I was looking at travel insurance for my dad and found that InsureandGo Gold had the highest Finder Score. It covered what we were looking for, including unlimited cover for trip cancellation and overseas medical expenses. I was happy with the price and loved that there was also a 10% discount for signing up through Finder. Before signing up, I checked the claims process and liked that we could easily find the forms on their website to see what would need to be filled out as well as a contact email and number for any issues. The sign-up process was quite easy and involved a medical screening questionnaire which took about 5 minutes to complete."

Exclusions

When considering insurance policies, it's very important to review the circumstances under which you will not have your claim paid. These are usually referred to as general exclusions in your policy wording. InsureandGo won't cover you when your claim arises if:

  • You decide to continue with travel plans despite warnings from appropriate local or national authorities (like smartraveller.gov.au).
  • You or a travelling companion altered or cancelled your travel plans simply because you changed your mind.
  • It relates to a pre-existing medical condition you have not had approved by InsureandGo.
  • You were acting irresponsibly or dangerously or engaging in illegal or reckless activities.
  • Any claim resulting from your pregnancy or childbirth after the 30th week of pregnancy.
  • It is related to the consequences of a risky or dangerous sport or activity.
  • You or anyone you're travelling with is under the influence of non-prescribed drugs or alcohol.

This list is not exhaustive, so make sure you review InsureandGo's Product Disclosure Statement for a detailed breakdown of what is and isn't covered.

How to make a InsureandGo claim

To minimise delays and address mixed feedback regarding claim wait times, follow this comprehensive guide to ensure your submission is processed as efficiently as possible.

1. Lodge your claim promptly

You must register your claim within 30 days of completing your travel. The most efficient way to do this is via the InsureandGo online claims portal.

2. Gather mandatory documentation

Lack of evidence is the primary cause of claim delays. Ensure you have the following ready:

  • Proof of ownership: Original receipts, tax invoices or valuation certificates for lost or stolen items.
  • Medical evidence: If claiming for medical expenses, provide a medical certificate or report from the treating doctor overseas.
  • Official reports: Police reports (for theft) or carrier reports (for lost luggage) must be obtained within 72 hours of the incident or as reasonably practicable.
  • Proof of travel: Your original flight itinerary and Certificate of Insurance.

3. Submit and track

  • Head to https://insureandgo.com.au/travel-insurance/important-claims-information/
  • Enter your policy number, last name and date of birth
  • Complete your claim details by answering all sections
  • Upload any supporting documents relevant to your claim
  • Submit, and InsureandGo will contact you within 10 business days

Here's the bottom line about InsureandGo Travel Insurance

InsureandGo's range of policies should suit most types of travellers. You'll find cover for business travel, non-residents and senior travellers up to 100 years of age. Even its most affordable policy, Bare Essentials, has unlimited cover for overseas medical expenses and a small amount of cover for personal belongings and additional emergency expenses.

No insurer is perfect, however, and one area that InsureandGo does fall behind on is how it covers pre-existing medical conditions. There aren't any conditions covered as standard, which means you'll have to complete a medical questionnaire to determine if you'll be covered and how much you'll need to pay on top of a standard policy.

We have a multi -trip policy.
We had to make a substantial medical claim (60K) on this policy on the first trip we took.
Does this affect subsequent trips on this policy?
