ahm has an easy-to-understand travel insurance offer that makes it clear what you are and are not covered for. Its benefits are generous and include some hard-to-find extras like cover for loss of income, permanent disability and alternative transport expenses to get you to a special event on time. Add on a 10% discount for ahm health members and you have a very competitive option.
Pros
ahm offers unlimited cover for 2 big features of travel insurance – overseas medical expenses and cancellation cover. For many, this should be the ultimate peace of mind both before and during your holiday.
This provider has some generous benefits that we don't see every day, like a hospital cash allowance up to $5,000 and loss of income cover up to $10,000.
Cons
All of ahm's international policies include a standard excess of $250, which is a little high compared to brands such as InsureandGo. However, you can reduce your excess to $100 or even $0 if you're happy to pay an increased premium.

What policies does ahm offer?
ahm keeps it simple with a choice of 3 travel insurance plans: International Comprehensive, International Medical Only and Domestic. If you're planning more than 1 trip for the year, an annual multi-trip policy is also an option.
The insurer of this product is Zurich Australian Insurance Limited. It comes with a cooling-off period and choice of standard excess.
The cooling-off period is 21 days which means if you cancel within 21 days of the date of purchase, ahm will give you your premium back. The excess is the amount you need to pay first when you claim for an insured event, and you can lower the cost of your policy by selecting a higher excess.
Here's a breakdown of ahm travel insurance features
When you choose an ahm policy, you get access to the standard features listed in line with your policy. Some of these features, like cancellation cover, can be claimed before you leave on your holiday. Standard features of ahm's Comprehensive plan include:
Additional expenses including travel or accommodation expenses
As well as the standard benefits, you can also choose from a range of extra options. These options will bump up the cost of your insurance but some are necessary if you want to be covered for certain activities.
Cruise cover. This add-on is mandatory for most multi-night cruises. It gives you unlimited onboard medical and dental, ship to shore medical and sea sickness cover. You'll also get $100 per day for cabin confinement and cover towards missed port and missed shore excursions.
Increase luggage item limits. If you're travelling with belongings valued above the existing limits for luggage and personal items cover, you can increase the limits for individual items.
Snow sports cover. Snow sports include skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling. This option covers you as long as you're on-piste, and are not racing or competing professionally.
Motorcycle/moped riding. Whether you're driving or riding as a pillion passenger, you are not covered for motorbike riding on a standard policy. You can include it as an extra and get covered for bikes up to 250cc engine capacity, as long as you're wearing a helmet, hold a valid licence in the country you're driving in, and are not racing or driving professionally.
Exclusions
Like any type of insurance, there are a few scenarios that aren't covered under your travel insurance policy. These are usually referred to as general exclusions. Here are some exclusions that your ahm policy will not cover:
Claims arising from any unlawful act committed by you

One of the features of many high-end or rewards credit cards is complimentary travel insurance. Unlike standalone travel insurance policies which require you to pay a premium, these policies are offered for free to cardholders. However, keep in mind that you still need to pay your card’s annual fee and will need to use your credit card to book certain holiday costs in order to activate cover.
Similar to standalone travel insurance policies, complimentary credit card travel insurance offers cover for a host of risks you face while travelling, including overseas emergency medical expenses, cancellation fees and lost deposits, luggage and personal belongings, and legal liability.
However, just as with any other type of insurance, these policies feature a range of limits and exclusions that you should be wary of before setting off on a trip. It also pays to compare credit card travel insurance policies closely before deciding which card offers the right cover for you.

Domestic travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation (domestic flights), loss or damage to luggage and expensive items, car rental excess charges and much more. Find out why domestic travel insurance is worth getting and compare policies from Australian insurers.
I am 71 years of age and already an AHM Member of long-standing who is embarking on an overseas bus tour of Great Britain followed by a 14 day Mediterranean cruise. I will be overseas for approximately 6 weeks. I am considering taking up travel insurance with AHM and inquire as to whether I can have my fortnightly premiums suspended for the 6 week period when the travel insurance is in play? It seems to me to be duplicitous to be paying for both types of health insurance for the period I am overseas.

Finder is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stand by our editorial principles.
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements.
