Our verdict: WAS Travel Insurance is a decent option if you’re looking for no-fuss insurance with the flexibility to add more cover to your policy to suit your particular needs.
On top of unlimited overseas medical expenses, you'll get up to $20,000 in funeral expenses if you die while on your trip.
WAS gives you the option to be covered for up to $40,000 in trip cancellation or interruption costs. By comparison, Tick Travel Insurance caps its benefit limit at $20,000.
Its COVID Essentials policy covers the basics in case COVID-19 impacts your travels.
Cons
Only 4 covers are included as standard. Yes, this means you can avoid paying for unnecessary coverage – but it means you might also overlook key add-ons such as trip cancellation, luggage and personal liability cover.
Congratulations, Wise and Silent!
Wise and Silent won the award for ‘Value Travel Insurance’ in the 2024 Product Awards.
WAS has 3 travel insurance policies to pick from. These are Domestic, COVID Essentials and Discovery. These are some of the main insured events a policy can cover you for:
Domestic
Covid Essentials
Discovery International
The cooling-off period is 21 days meaning you can change your policy or cancel within this period, and WAS will refund your premium in full. By opting for a higher excess – the amount you need to contribute to a claim – you can score a lower premium.

We've listed the core add-ons with the Discovery policy here:

Exclusions
As with any travel insurance plan, some events won't be covered. General exclusions with WAS include the following situations:
Any pre-existing condition that's excluded from your policy
Pregnancy after the 24th week
Childbirth at any stage of pregnancy
Activities such as snow sports – to be covered, you'd need to have taken out an activity pack with your Discovery policy
Indirect losses including loss of enjoyment or business opportunity
A criminal or dishonest act by you or a person with whom you're in collusion
Loss from, or related to, impairment due to alcohol
Acts of war
Going to a country with a "Do not travel" warning from the government
Make sure you read WAS's PDS for more detail on policy exclusions and restrictions.
Here's the bottom line about WAS
WAS offers 2 easy-to-understand policies with some competitive cover benefits. Both policies are aimed at international travellers. If you're one of the 27% of Aussies who intend to holiday in Australia in the next 12 months*, you'll need to look elsewhere.
Being able to add coverage of up to $40,000 for trip cancellation or interruption should be plenty for most travellers. On the other hand, its rental vehicle excess of $6,000 is half of the $10,000 limit offered by Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI). WAS's website is refreshingly easy to navigate – not a given when it comes to insurance.
Don't forget to take out cover as soon as you've confirmed your travel dates, to get the most protection from your policy.
WAS stands for Wise and Silent. It is an Australian provider based in Queensland. It is a recent entrant into the travel insurance market. To date, it has just 5 reviews on Trustpilot (correct as of March 2023).
WAS Insurance is underwritten by Pacific International Insurance Pty Ltd, an Australasian insurance firm that's been around for more than 2 decades.
In some cases, yes. WAS lists the different types of pre-existing conditions which are covered automatically in its policy. These include asthma, sleep apnoea and some mental health conditions such as depression.
It's really important to check the PDS to see which medical conditions are and aren't covered, along with any restrictions that apply. If a condition is not specifically called out in your policy, it will be excluded.

Important information about this website
Finder makes money from featured partners, but editorial opinions are our own.
Finder is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stand by our editorial principles.
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.
Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
