What you need to know:
- Bankwest credit cards offer base overseas travel insurance for trips of up to 31 days with an eligible Platinum card and up to 6 months with a World Mastercard.
- You don't need to activate this insurance or apply to get cover for an overseas trip - coverage is automatic once you meet eligibility and the terms and conditions.
- You can pay a premium to extend your cover and/or get more cover for issues including cancellation, rental vehicle excess insurance and existing medical conditions.
- Your spouse and dependants travelling with you can also get cover, but there are some requirements and exclusions.

When does the 6 months cover my Platinum card provides start. I am purchasing flights and tours now for June next year.
Hi Ross,
Thanks for your question.
It will apply when you depart Australia and start your overseas trip.
I hope this has helped.
Thanks,
Elizabeth
Hi I am the holder of Bankwest platinum Mastercard I have been declined cover due to Hypertension Cerebrovascular disease. Carotid endarterectomy and TIA and depression can I still travel to Turkey in December and pay for travel insurance
Hi Anthony,
Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, the ailments you have described above are included on most lists of general exclusions for travel insurance. However, there are travel insurance providers that do provide cover for pre-existing conditions. There is a screening text for those wanting to take out this type of cover and cover is not guaranteed.
If you follow the link below, it will take you to an article about taking out cover for those with pre-existing conditions:

Some providers that do provide cover for pre-existing cover include:
Insure&Go

Southern Cross Travel Insurance

WorldCare

I hope this was helpful.
All the best,

Hi,
I am travelling to America in August and we will be hiring a car. It is not compulsory to get the collision damage waiver insurance or supplemental liability insurance in USA and I was wondering if the international travel insurance covers damage to other cars and people (third party) and the rental car?
Hi Jen,
Thanks for your question.
The Bankwest overseas travel insurance offers rental vehicle insurance excess cover. In the terms and conditions it states that, “We will reimburse you for any insurance excess or deductible which you become legally liable to pay in respect of a claim under the rental vehicle insurance during the rental period provided:
•the rental vehicle must be rented from a licensed rental agency; and
•as part of the rental agreement you have taken rental vehicle insurance; and
•you have complied with all requirements of the rental organisation under the hiring agreement and of the rental vehicle insurer.
But we will not pay for…
We will not pay for your costs arising from:
•loss or damage resulting from the operation of the rental vehicle in violation of the terms of the rental agreement; or
• wear and tear, gradual deterioration, damage from insects or vermin, inherent vice or damage”.
Cheers,
Shirley
Sorry but due to the American system of classifying the insurance I am confused. They offer supplemental insurance and collision damage waiver but it is optional it is not part of rental contract. So according to Bankwest statement it’s says will cover deductible or excess if insurance was purchased under rental agreement. But because it is not part of rental agreement it is optional are we covered for damages to other people/property while driving ? Many thanks
Hi Jen,
Thanks for your question.
For quality assurance, please direct your question to Zurich, who is the insurance provider for Bankwest.
They will be able to give you an informed answer.

Shirley
Hi I have paid for a cruise using my bankwest card. To be covered by the travel insurance do I need to tell you where and when I will be travelling and if so how do I do this. Thanks
Hi Bev,
Thanks for your question.
The insurance is automatically activated. However, if you make a claim you will need to show evidence that you’re eligible for the insurance.
Cheers,
Shirley
Hi, I booked my international flight on my Bankwest Platinum Credit card on 3/12/2013. COuld you please tell me if the complimentary travel insurance covers the following:
*helicopter rescue
*air ambulance repatriation
My trekking guide requires this information.
I will be trekking in French Alps.
Thanks, Julie
Hi Julole,
Thanks for your question.
The Bankwest terms and conditions don’t specifically states if you’ll be covered for air ambulance repatriation or air ambulance repatriation. Rather, it states the situations in which general exclusions could apply to you, e.g. “your participation in any kind of professional sport for which you obtain/are attempting to obtain financial gain, sponsorship or benefit from participating in or training for that sport.”
Please refer to the booklet I’ve emailed you for more information, from page 20 onwards.
Cheers,
Shirley
