I’m travelling to Europe soon and gave bought my return tickets on my platinum card, but I am concerned about “relatives”! My parents are aged 82 and 86, they both have health issues but not terminal. If anything does happen while I am away will I be covered if I need to come back home? Thank you

      Hi Pina,

      Thanks for your question.

It depends on the situation as to why you are required to cancel your trip. I’ve emailed you the policy document covering what is included and excluded, from page 36 onwards.

      Cheers,

I find the and/or parts of the eligibility requirement for international travel insurance confusing.

I am about to pre-pay more than $6,000 on a cruise for myself and my wife leaving from Australia and returning to Australia. I have already paid a deposit of $1,000 i.e. $500 each using my BankWest Platinum credit card. Do I have to pay the balance using the card, or is the amount already paid ($1,000) sufficient for international travel insurance eligibility?

      Hi Roy,

      Thanks for your question.

The International Travel Insurance Policy is offered to Bankwest Gold or Platinum credit cardholders who use their eligible card account to buy their return travel tickets before they leave Australia; that is, if they purchase 100% of their return travel ticket costs with the eligible card.

      Cheers,
      Shirley

      Thank you for your reply.

I needed a quick answer to my question so, while waiting for your response, I rang Zurich Insurance. They gave me information contrary to your reply.

They told me it is necessary to have purchased the return fare prior to leaving Australia but it is not necessary to use the BankWest credit card for that e.g. it could be paid in cash or another method. But it is necessary to have used the card for at least $500 prepayment of travel costs.

Can you please validate this or otherwise asap?

      Hi Roy,

      Thanks for your question.

It’s a bit different to what they’ve mentioned in the fine print; it states that, “they pay these costs by one (or a combination) of the following methods: by charging to their eligible credit card account; and/or by redeeming their Bankwest More Reward points (excluding any points redeemed for Frequent Flyer programs); and/or by paying with redeemable travel agency flight vouchers that were obtained by converting their Bankwest More Reward points”.

I’ve also emailed you the booklet I’m looking at, page 28.

      Cheers,

Is that a minimum amount spend on airfare to be eligible for the insurance cover?

Does the cover apply only if the flight departs and return to Australia?

      Shirley Liu's headshotFinder
      ShirleyJuly 1, 2014Finder

      Hi Kim,

      Thanks for your question.

There is no minimum spend, as long as you purchase your return plane ticket to and from and Australia with the eligible card prior to leaving Australia.

So does it mean Iam not covered as Brisbane and Cairns in the same state ? I am too clear about the definition of ‘interstate’ ?

      Shirley Liu's headshotFinder
      ShirleyJune 3, 2014Finder

      Hi Roger,

      Thanks for your question.

Interstate is defined as “interstate flight means travel on a registered passenger airline (but not charter trips) from any mainland Australian state or territory or from Tasmania, to any other mainland Australian state or territory, or from any mainland Australian state or territory to another mainland Australian state or territory or to Tasmania” in the terms and conditions.

I’ve emailed you a copy as well so you use it as a reference. If you have any question about the policy please speak to Zurich Insurance.

Thanks Shirley for such a detailed and clear response. The site did not charge a cancelation fee. They just kept my $65 for one night in Bangkok. Can I therefore claim the $65 or is it limited to 15 per cent.I am in Thailand or I’d ring the insurance. Thanks Fred
