Oppo R9 and R9 Plus: Australian pricing and specifications

Oppo’s latest hero phones feature a focus on selfies and mid-range processors to go with their mid-range pricing.

Oppo overnight launched its latest two handsets, the Oppo R9 and Oppo R9 Plus in Beijing. As with other Oppo handsets the general pitch is towards the mid-range with the use of the company’s "Color OS" overlay over Android, giving it a distinctly iOS-style feel. We've seen the same thing previously with phones such as the Oppo R7s and Oppo F1.

That iPhone similarity could be said to extend to the design of the Oppo R9 and Oppo R9 Plus, which bear more than a slight resemblance to Apple’s iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

Both the Oppo R9 and Oppo R9 Plus are relatively large devices with 5.5 inch and 6 inch AMOLED displays. Underneath the display lurks slightly different processor combinations, with the R9 offering up MediaTek's 2GHz octa-core Helio P10, while the R9 Plus runs on Qualcomm's 1.8GHz octa-core Snapdragon 652 chipset. Both phones feature 4GB of RAM, and the launch devices ran on Android 5.1.1.

On the camera front there’s a strong focus on selfies, with the Oppo R9’s front facing camera having a higher resolution than its rear camera, and an inbuilt "beauty" mode designed to smooth skin. We’ll have to wait and see whether Oppo’s managed to crack making that kind of feature realistic, or if it turns everyone into anime avatars instead, as so many beauty modes do.

The Oppo R9 will sell for $599 outright when it launches in Australia, while the Oppo R9 Plus will sell for $699. They will go on sale in May with exact timing to be determined later.

Oppo sells its phones directly through its website and did have a retail arrangement with Dick Smith, but with that brand going online solely through Kogan it’s unclear what will happen with any newer Oppo phones. Selected devices (such as the Oppo F1) have also gone on sale or contract with Optus or Telechoice in the past.

Here are the essential specifications for both phones.

Oppo has taken its time, but it’s announced as of 4/7/2016 that the R9 Plus is available in Australia for $699 outright.

      Hi Kym,

The Oppo R9 is currently stocked in JB HIFI stores. Otherwise, your best bet would be to purchase directly from Oppo’s online store.
