Flip mobile review: Our verdict

Flip offers no frills mobile plans that will suit those who have small to medium data requirements.

On the plus side, Flip is relatively cheap giving you decent data for your money. But it lacks a lot rewards and features that other providers offer.

So you'll need to weigh up costs compared with additional perks.

Flip could be right for you if:

  • You're looking for a simple mobile plan. There's no fancy bells and whistles with Flip's mobile plans, just calls, texts and data each month.
  • Looking to bundle your services. Flip allows you to bundle your internet and phone plans together. This can save you $5 to $10 a month on your mobile plan.

But keep in mind that Flip:

  • Requires a full month notice for cancellation. This means if you cancelled your plan on the first day of the month, you'd be charged for the service for that month.
  • Lack add ons. Flip is lacking when it comes to additional perks. So if you need services such as data banking or international roaming, this might not be for you.

Value for money

Flip offers 3 mobile plans that are best suited to low to medium data users.

Its 3GB plan stacks up well if your monthly budget is around $10 a month and you don't need much data in return.

The other 2 plans beat our $1 per GB benchmark. However, Flip hasn't got all the additional perks such as data banking or international roaming, meaning you might be able to find a similar priced plan with rewards and features.

Things to watch out for

  • You have to give a full month's notice to cancel your mobile plan. This is unlike most mobile providers which don't charge you extra or have any notice period for switching plans.
  • You can only make payments by automated direct debit.
  • Flip has a few additional fees. You could be subject to a SIM card charges - non activated fee of $10 if you have not activated your SIM within 30 days, late payment fee of $10 and a paper bill processing fee of $2.98.

Coverage

Signing up with Flip will give you access to the Optus 4G network.

  • Optus's network covers 98.5% of the population – greater than Vodafone (98.4%), but not as much as Telstra (99.7%).
  • You'll get exactly the same coverage as if you'd bought your plan directly from Optus.
  • When you're in metro areas you should have no reception issues, but you could lose coverage in some rural and regional areas.

Customer service

Flip has a few ways to get in touch if you have a question, with contact hours between 9am-8pm AEST Monday to Friday and 10am-4pm Saturday. You can:

  • Ring the customer support line.
  • Send a message to the social media page on Facebook.
  • Shoot through an email to its customer service team

Bonus features

Flip doesn't offer much in the way of additional features but you can:

Bundle and save

If you bundle both your mobile and NBN services with Flip, you can save anywhere between $5 to $10 a month on your phone plan. Just keep in mind the bundling discount is not available on Flip's 3GB plan.

What if I want to keep my current phone number?
You can transfer your existing mobile number to Flip when you sign up for a new plan. Flip doesn't say how long the transfer will take, but porting generally takes between 24-48 hours.

If your current mobile number isn't registered under your name, it might take a little longer. Read our guide on how to change ownership of your mobile number here..
