Tangerine received the following highly commended awards in the 2024 Product Awards:
While Tangerine has some of the best and cheapest NBN plans around, its mobile plans are just okay.
You only have the option of month-to-month plans, but they're at least suited to all sorts of data users - from low to high.
Its value is better served with the higher data plans as they stack up much better against our $1 per GB benchmark.
Here's what you may appreciate with Tangerine mobile:
But Tangerine is lacking on some fronts:
Tangerine's cheaper plans under $20 are fairly standard, matching up almost exactly with those from other budget Telstra providers such as ALDImobile.
In particular, the $19.90 plan is basically the same as its competitors, offering 10GB a month. This is around industry standard.
Again like most providers, when it comes to data, you'll get better value if you sign up to a larger plan.
Tangerine uses parts of the Telstra 3G, 4G and 5G network for its plans.
Tangerine's support services are available 8:30am-7pm AEST Monday to Friday, or 9am-6pm weekends. You can:
Tangerine's plans are feature-light, with just a couple of options on some plans.
When you travel overseas in selected countries, a 24-hour roaming pack will automatically activate.
Like all international roaming, it is expensive though – For a $25, 5 day pack you'll only get 1GB of data, 60 minutes of talk and 60 texts.
All other countries have expensive pay-as-you-go data and calls, making a local or travel SIM a much better option.
All of Tangerine's plans that cost $20 or more come with unlimited calls to 15 countries.
This is a welcome extra if you frequently call friends or family overseas, but is also widely available from cheaper providers.
Although Tangerine's plans are decent, there are other providers with great features that are worth considering.
For cheaper data:
Looking at Tangerine's 100GB mobile plan? Big-data users can get the same chunk of data for almost half the price with Circles.Life's 100GB plan.
For more extras:
ALDImobile is another provider on the Telstra wholesale network. Its plans are quite similar to Tangerine but with more extras like data rollover.
For a bundling discount:
If you're looking to bundle your NBN and mobile under the same provider, Mate offers a better deal than Tangerine, with a $10 monthly discount.
Once you've decided which Tangerine plan you like, you'll simply have to fill out a few details. From there Tangerine will take care of the rest. SIM delivery is free via standard postage, but can take up to 10 business days to arrive at your door.
What if I want to keep my current phone number?
You can choose to keep your current number during the SIM activation process (which requires you to ring up Tangerine). The activation and transfer process should take between 10 minutes and 1 hour.
If your current number is under someone else's name (a parent or a partner), it might take a little longer. Check our guide on how to transfer ownership of your mobile number..
