Finder Score for mobile plans

We've scored over 300 mobile plans on everything from cost to data allowance and important features.

Our experts give each plan a score out of 10 - totally fair, with no commercial strings attached.

Read the full methodology

Tangerine mobile review: Our verdict

While Tangerine has some of the best and cheapest NBN plans around, its mobile plans are just okay.

You only have the option of month-to-month plans, but they're at least suited to all sorts of data users - from low to high.

Its value is better served with the higher data plans as they stack up much better against our $1 per GB benchmark.

Here's what you may appreciate with Tangerine mobile:

  • Access to the Telstra wholesale network including 5G
  • Live chat support available on the Tangerine website
  • Unlimited calls to 15 countries on most plans
  • Option to bank up to 1000GB of data for future use

But Tangerine is lacking on some fronts:

  • Plans are charged in advance despite being advertised as postpaid
  • Keep a watch out for additional costs. For instance, there's a $3.50 fee for non-direct debit payments
  • No bundling discount available for those on a Tangerine NBN plan

Value for money

Tangerine's cheaper plans under $20 are fairly standard, matching up almost exactly with those from other budget Telstra providers such as ALDI Mobile.

In particular, the $19.90 plan is basically the same as its competitors, offering 10GB a month. This is around industry standard.

Again like most providers, when it comes to data, you'll get better value if you sign up to a larger plan.

  • Good to know: 3 of Tangerine's 5 mobile plans are below the $1/GB of data benchmark. But these are the mobile providers 3 largest plans.

coverage icon

Coverage

Tangerine uses parts of the Telstra 4G and 5G network for its plans.

  • Telstra's wholesale network reaches 98.8% of the population.
  • This is still wider coverage than either Optus or Vodafone.
    • You shouldn't have problems in metro areas, but may notice a dip in reception in rural and regional areas compared to plans on the full Telstra network (which reach 99.7% of Aussies).

customer service icon

Customer service

Tangerine's support services are available 8:30am-7pm AEST Monday to Friday, or 9am-6pm weekends. You can:

  • Ring up the call centre to get over-the-phone help
  • Chat to a customer service agent via live chat on the website
  • Leave a message on the Tangerine Facebook page
  • Good to know: You can also contact Tangerine via a Whatsapp phone number; however, response speed time can vary.

bonus icon

Bonus features

Tangerine's plans are feature-light, with just a couple of options on some plans.

✈️ 24-hour roaming pack

When you travel overseas in selected countries, a 24-hour roaming pack will automatically activate.

Like all international roaming, it is expensive though – For a $25, 5 day pack you'll only get 1GB of data, 60 minutes of talk and 60 texts.

All other countries have expensive pay-as-you-go data and calls, making a local or travel SIM a much better option.

🌏 International inclusions

All of Tangerine's plans that cost $20 or more come with unlimited calls to 15 countries.

This is a welcome extra if you frequently call friends or family overseas, but is also widely available from cheaper providers.

Ready to sign up to Tangerine mobile?

Once you've decided which Tangerine plan you like, you'll simply have to fill out a few details. From there Tangerine will take care of the rest. SIM delivery is free via standard postage, but can take up to 10 business days to arrive at your door.

phone icon

What if I want to keep my current phone number?
You can choose to keep your current number during the SIM activation process (which requires you to ring up Tangerine). The activation and transfer process should take between 10 minutes and 1 hour.

If your current number is under someone else's name (a parent or a partner), it might take a little longer. Check our guide on how to transfer ownership of your mobile number..

Where can I find the Value Pack if we sign up for Tangerine mobile (2) plus NBN. We have fibre internet, and already have a Telstra Modem.

I live in Kilsyth Victoria, where reception on NBN is not too good. At present I am with Telstra, and wondered if my reception could be even worse with Tangerine?

Hi Elise! Tangerine currently offers NBN speeds of up to 700 Mbps in your suburb, but it depends on your residential address. If your street uses Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), you aren’t going to get anywhere near those speeds.

However, Tangerine does currently offer a free Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) upgrade on high-speed plans (100Mbps and above).

If you’re currently struggling with an FTTC connection, this could be a great way to fix your connectivity issues at no extra cost. You can check out the eligible plans here (Speedy and above).
