How do you find the best mobile plan on the Telstra network?

Besides Telstra itself, there are around 21 small providers, also known as MVNOs (mobile virtual network operators), that use its network.

So the first step in choosing the best plan is to decide if you're happy with Telstra's wholesale network coverage or you need access to its full network. Providers have maps on their website to help you out.

After that, you can think about price and other features (more on that in the next section).

  • Full Telstra network coverage. This is available through Telstra itself and Boost Mobile. JB Hi‑Fi Mobile also provides full coverage because it sells Telstra’s retail plans rather than wholesale plans. This network reaches around 99.7% of Australians.
  • Wholesale Telstra network coverage. All other MVNOs run on Telstra’s wholesale network, which covers around 98.8% of Australians. While the difference is small, some regional and rural areas may experience slightly reduced coverage.

So, unless you live in a more remote area, Telstra's wholesale network should suit you well and give you access to far more options.

Or you could opt for Boost Mobile if you don't want to pay Telstra's premium prices.

Michelle Kwong's headshot

"I've been with Boost Mobile for 4 years now and have definitely noticed the difference of being on the full Telstra network, compared to the wholesale network. If my partner and I are hiking in the Blue Mountains, his reception will usually fizzle out before mine as he's with Everyday Mobile which runs on the slightly smaller wholesale network."

Hi. I only use around 100G per year! The minimum you offer is 270G!
Any else you could offer me?

Hi Michel, We’ve highlighted plans here with data allowances that reflect typical usage patterns, but you can definitely find plans which offer less. This filter will show you plans using the Telstra network with less than 10GB a month – but you’ll notice that many of these aren’t much (or any) cheaper than options with higher data allowances, so you might want to focus on price more than data allowance. Hope this helps.
