Benefits of getting a credit card with Westpac

Mobile payments

Westpac credit cards can be added to the following mobile wallets and apps:

  • Apple Pay
  • Google Pay
  • Samsung Pay
  • Garmin Pay

Westpac Extras

This complimentary program gives you access to cashback offers with well-known brands and stores in Australia. You'll see the latest offers when you log in to Westpac Live. You can also sign up to get offers emailed to you. When you get an offer, you just need to shop at the store and pay with your eligible Westpac credit card, and the cashback will be added to your account as a statement credit.

You can get Westpac Extras offers with any personal Westpac credit card, but not with the Westpac BusinessChoice, Westpac corporate credit cards, Westpac consumer or business debit cards. Also keep in mind that payments made through platforms like PayPal are not eligible to earn cashback.

Westpac SmartPlan credit card instalment plans

Westpac SmartPlan lets you pay off your credit card balance in regular, monthly instalments. This means you'll pay the same amount for your plan each month. Some SmartPlans also offer a reduced interest rate, with 2 main types to choose from:

  • Large Purchase SmartPlan. You can set up a Large Purchase SmartPlan for any single purchase worth $500 or more as long as it's been made in the past 30 days. This makes it suited to individual big-ticket items bought with your credit card, such as a new laptop, flights or hotel bookings. Keep in mind that establishment fees apply and will be shown before you set up a plan.
  • Balance SmartPlan. This option allows you to set up instalments for any credit card balance of $200 or more.

You can set up a Westpac SmartPlan in a few clicks through online banking or the Westpac App.

How do I cancel my Westpac SmartPlan?

You can cancel your SmartPlan at any time through Westpac online banking or the Westpac app. There are no cancellation fees and it will take up to 2 business days to confirm the cancellation.

Westpac PartPay

Similar to buy now pay later, Westpac PartPay lets you split purchases of $100 or more into 4 fortnightly repayments. The repayments come out of your nominated bank account and there are no additional fees as long as you have enough money in your account for each fortnight's automatic repayment.

If you have an eligible Westpac credit card, you can set up PartPay through the Westpac App and will get a digital card (linked to your credit card account). Then, just use your PartPay card to make any purchases you want to pay for in instalments.

Annual fee waiver - home loan offer

With a Westpac Home Loan Premier Advantage Package, you can get the annual fee waived on one of the following credit cards:

  • Low Fee
  • Altitude (including Altitude Qantas)
  • Altitude Platinum (including Altitude Qantas Platinum)
  • Altitude Black (including Altitude Qantas Black)
  • Low Rate

Existing customers may also get a fee waiver for an eligible credit card that is no longer taking new applications. Just note that the Advantage Package only offers one credit card fee waiver per package.

Security features

Westpac credit card security includes 24-hour fraud protection monitoring services for your account, added online security through Mastercard Identity Check and Visa Secure and an online transaction security guarantee to ensure you're not liable for online transactions made without your knowledge or consent.

The Westpac Global ATM Alliance network

When you get a Westpac credit card, you can use it to withdraw cash for free at ATMs that are part of the Westpac Group. This includes ATMs offered by Westpac, St.George, BankSA and Bank of Melbourne. You can also save on ATM withdrawal fees worldwide thanks to the Westpac Global ATM alliance.

How to apply for a Westpac credit card

Applying for a credit card online is fast and easy. You'll need to be at least 18 years of age and meet the card's eligibility criteria. I am a member of the Thai International Frequent Flyer program (Star Alliance), and wonder if there is a Westpac credit card that will allow me to accrue point that I can use for Thai International flights?

      Hi Cliff.

      Thanks for your question.

Westpac offers a credit card that allows you to earn Singapore Airline KrisFlyer points. As a member of the Star Alliance, you are able to use your KrisFlyer points on Star Alliance member airlines.

Alternatively, you can go for a card that allows you to earn Altitude Points, and then transfer your Altitude points to a New Zealand Airlines Airports frequent flyer account, which can then be used on Star Alliance member airlines. It worth mentioning that if you transfer points between rewards programs and frequent flyer airlines, you will not receive as many points as if you had gone for a card that allows you to earn frequent flyer points directtly.

      I hope this helps.

      Cheers,
      Jacob

We are travelling to France, London and Scotland at the end of September, we have accounts with Westpac but no credit cards, does Westpac have any card systems that we can use with our own money? We would prefer to use our savings and not credit.

      Default GravatarFinder
      JacobAugust 25, 2013Finder

      Hi Sue,

      Thanks for your inquiry.

There are a few options available to you. You may compare travel-friendly money options. You either have the option of using your Westpac debit card overseas, which will incur a number of fees like currency conversion and ATM fees, or you can go for a travel money card. These cards are similar to debit cards in that you are spending your own money, but you’re able to load AUD onto the card and transfer it to a number of currencies, you may still get charged an ATM fee (some travel cards don’t), but you won’t be charged the convert the funds into a local currency provided that you’ve transferred the funds into the local currency. Travel money cards have a limited number of currencies you can transfer AUD. However, travel money cards work with Pounds Sterling and Euros. Westpac does not currently offer a travel money card, but there are a number of providers to compare.

If you decide to use your Westpac debit card, Westpac has a global ATM partnership with some of the world’s leading financial institutions. This means you can use certain ATMs for free when you are overseas. Westpac Global ATM partners include Barclays Bank (UK) and BNP Paribas (France).

      I hope this helps.

      Cheers,
      Jacob

Complimentary Travel Insurance coverage: I purchased return airfares for my partner and I to Thailand using my Altitude Platinum Credit Card (Linked to QANTAS) . We are not married and we do not live together at this stage as we are in the process of blending families and moving interstate. I know that in the past when I have purchased airline tickets for myself and my son we were both covered by the complimentary travel insurance but I am wondering if my partner is covered. I have read the 54 page document but am still unclear about this as your meaning of partner may differ from mine due to our current slightly unusual circumstances.
Thanks for your clarification and assistance in advance.

      Hello Vanessa,
      thanks for the question!

According to Westpac’s terms and conditions for this product, a spouse is covered through the cardholders policy. A spouse however is defined by Zurich (the provider of this insurance) as: “a de facto partner of the cardholder who is permanently living with the cardholder at the time the journey starts or a person married to the cardholder. We may ask for proof of any relationship.”

For more information it may be useful to contact Zurich directly.

      I hope this helps,
      Marc.
