You can earn up to 200,000 Amex points yearly by referring up to 20 friends or family.
Both you and your friend can earn bonus points or perks but they must use your specific referral link.
Referrals are for new Amex customers only. Your friend cannot have held an Amex card in the last 18 months.
The Amex Refer a Friend program gives you a way to get more points for yourself, plus perks for people you refer to American Express. When an offer is available, you earn bonus points for each successful referral you make.
The people you refer may also get bonus points or other perks, such as a waived annual fee in the first year.
How many points can I get through the Amex Refer a Friend program?
You'll typically get between 5,000 and 40,000 bonus points (or more) for each successful referral. The amount depends on factors including your card and the specific American Express referral offer. You can refer up to 20 people and earn a maximum of 200,000 points per year.
To give you an idea of the potential value, below we've included some examples of referral offers available in February 2024.
Qantas American Express Ultimate Card
If you hold a Qantas American Express Ultimate Card, you get 40,000 Qantas Points for each friend or family member that applies and is approved using your referral link.
The people you refer will also earn 120,000 bonus Qantas Points if they apply through your referral link by 17 November 2026 and spend $5,000 on eligible purchases in their first 3 months of card membership.
People you refer did not get bonus points with this offer.
How can I refer a friend to Amex?
You can refer friends through the Amex app or website. The steps below take you through how to do it online. We've also included screenshots of someone with an Amex card accessing referral details from a mobile phone to give you an example of the process.
You will see the current offer (or offers) you can get for referring friends.
Note: If you have more than one Amex card or referral offer, choose the one that you want to use. You'll then get a referral link for it.
3. Share your referral link with friends and family
You'll get a link you can copy, or share through email and other social media apps.
Note: Make sure your friends and family apply using your referral link. Otherwise, you won't be eligible for a referral bonus and they won't be eligible for any referral offers either.
Amex Refer a Friend key details
The terms and conditions for American Express referral offers vary but usually include the following:
No spam. The terms and conditions state that you shouldn't spam. You also shouldn't share this offer in public forums, on social media or anywhere else where people you don't know could use it. So, make sure you ask for permission before sending someone a referral link.
Friends and family. Only send American Express referrals and offers to close friends and family.
Referral cap. You can refer up to 20 people and earn up to a maximum 200,000 points each year. So if you successfully referred 20 people, you'd get an equivalent to 10,000 points per person based on this cap, even if the bonus points offer was higher.
Approved applications only. You'll only get a referral bonus if the person you refer applies through your referral link and is approved. There may be other terms and conditions for specific offers too. For privacy and confidentiality, American Express will not let you know if someone you have referred is approved or declined. If they are successful, the bonus points will be added to your account in 8 to 10 weeks.
New memberships. This program is only open to friends or family that would be considered as new American Express members. This means the people you refer cannot hold a current Amex card and cannot have held an American Express card in the last 18 months.
With these details in mind, you’re all set share your American Express referral code with friends or family members who are interested in getting an Amex card. Just remember, referral bonuses are typically only available for a limited time, so you'll need to wait until an offer is available through your account.

Finder is a comparison service. We do not compare every product or every provider in the market.
We make money through commercial arrangements with some of the providers on this site. Products marked 'Sponsored', 'Promoted', 'Featured' or 'Advertisement' appear as a result of a commercial arrangement.
Our editorial content, product reviews and any 'Top Pick' designations are prepared independently of these commercial arrangements.
The default order of products in our tables can be influenced by commercial arrangements. You can re-sort or filter using the controls above each table.

Finder is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stand by our editorial principles.
Our comparison service does not include every product or every provider in the market. Some product issuers offer their products under multiple brands or through associated companies. Where we can, we identify the underlying issuer so you can compare like with like, but you should always check with the provider directly to confirm which brand you are dealing with.
Finder is a comparison website and an intermediary. We are not a product issuer and we do not provide personal financial or credit advice. When you click a link to a product, or apply for a product through our site, you deal directly with the product issuer. We may receive a referral fee, commission or other payment from the issuer if you click through, apply or take out a product. We describe these arrangements in more detail under 'How we make money' below.
Product features, fees, terms and eligibility criteria are set by the product issuer and may change. We rely on information supplied by issuers when we present product details on our site. Before you apply for or take out any product, you should confirm the details directly with the issuer.
We earn revenue from Finder in four principal ways:
Referral fees and commissions. When you click a product link, complete an enquiry form or apply for a product through our site, we may receive a referral fee, commission or other payment from the product issuer. We may also receive payment based on the volume of leads or conversions we send to an issuer.
Sponsored placements. Products marked 'Sponsored', 'Promoted', 'Featured' or 'Advertisement' appear as a result of a commercial arrangement between Finder and the issuer. These labels always indicate a paid placement. We do not use them for editorial choices.
Display advertising. Banner advertising, newsletter advertising and similar display ads on our site are paid by advertisers.
Content sponsorship. Some articles, videos and social media posts are sponsored by an issuer and are clearly labelled as such.
Our editorial opinions, product reviews and any 'Top Pick' designations are prepared independently of these commercial arrangements. A 'Top Pick' is an editorial choice made by our writers and editors based on the criteria described on each comparison page. A 'Top Pick' is not a personal recommendation and does not mean the product is appropriate for your circumstances.
If you would like to know whether we have a commercial arrangement with a specific product issuer, please contact us.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the default order can be influenced by commercial arrangements we have with product issuers. In some categories, sponsored or featured products appear in the top positions of the table by default, and are always labelled as such.
Other factors that influence default order include price, fees and features, and (where relevant) our editorial view of the product.
You can re-sort every comparison table using the controls above the table. You can filter by product features that matter to you. The order you see after re-sorting or filtering is not influenced by commercial arrangements.
