Your children and your grandchildren are covered for free if they are 25 years old or younger, are financially dependent on their parents, are not working full time, do not require a medical assessment, are travelling with you the whole time; and are listed on the certificate of insurance. If they meet the criteria above and you choose the ski and winter sports or cruise add-on, they'll be covered for that as well. .

What if I change my mind about RAA Travel Insurance?

You have 21 days from the day you buy your policy to cancel it for a full refund, as long as you haven't started your trip, haven't made a claim and don't intend to make one.

How many trips can I take on the Annual Multi-Trip policy?

You are covered for an unlimited number of trips over a 12 month period, provided that each trip is at least 250km from your home.

RAA Travel Insurance offers cover for mopeds, scooters and motorbikes as standard, as long as you can meet the requirements, including having a valid Australian licence.
RAA's Premium policy has a rental car excess of $8,000 - higher than some other providers we compared.

Cons

Other than snow sports, RAA doesn't offer an adventure or activity pack, so some higher-risk sports aren't covered including outdoor rock-climbing and skydiving.
RAA has fairly high benefit limits but doesn't give travellers the option to increase them, so if you're travelling with very expensive items, you might want to look elsewhere.

How does RAA Travel Insurance cover COVID-19?

RAA's Premium International policy has you covered for a range of expenses related to COVID-19, including but not limited to:

Overseas emergency medical costs if you need treatment for COVID-19 while on your trip
Cash for general expenses while in hospital due to COVID-19
Repatriation to Australia or another country if deemed medically necessary
Return travel for supervised children if you can no longer look after them
Overseas funeral costs if you die due to COVID-19
Costs incurred from having to cancel, delay or change your trip because of an unforeseen COVID-19 related event, such as you, your travelling companion or a relative being diagnosed with COVID-19. COVID-19 cancellation claims have a lower limit than other cancellation claims.

There are some scenarios that are not covered by RAA including situations where you were diagnosed with COVID-19 before heading on your trip and if you're unable to provide a doctor's diagnosis for COVID-19.

What policies does RAA offer?

RAA offers seven policies in total. Three international policies - Premium, Essentials and Basics and three Australian policies - Domestic, Domestic Cancellation and Rental Car Excess. RAA also offers Annual Multi-Trip cover, which can be used for both domestic and international trips.

RAA offers two optional add-ons: ski and winter sports cover, and cruise cover.

Ski and winter sports cover. Cover for a range of risks related to winter sports, including equipment, piste closure and loss or theft of lift passes.
Cruise cover. You need this option for international ocean cruises. It adds cover for cabin confinement, missed ports, missed shore excursions and marine rescue diversion. River cruises are covered automatically.

Exclusions

Unfortunately, travel insurance doesn't cover everything. Generally, RAA will not pay your claim if it relates to:

Unlawful, reckless or unreasonably unsafe behaviour by you
Behaviour while you were drunk or under the influence of drugs
Expenses related to a pre-existing medical condition
An act of war, invasion or revolution
Insolvency of a travel agent, tour operator or booking agent
Mandatory quarantines or isolations
An act of war, invasion or revolution
You being unfit to travel or travelling against medical advice
Childbirth or pregnancy complications from the 26th week of gestation, or complications with this or a previous pregnancy that RAA hasn't assessed and accepted (childbirth at any stage isn't covered unless an accident before the end of the 25th week brings it on early)
A multiple pregnancy (such as twins) that RAA hasn't assessed and accepted
An elective medical or dental treatment, cosmetic procedure or body modification (including tattoos or piercing)
Self-inflicted injury or illness, suicide or attempted suicide

How to make an RAA Travel Insurance claim

The quickest way to make a claim from RAA Travel Insurance is by using its online claim lodgement which is available 24/7.

You will first need to register with the email address you used to purchase your policy, then set up your password once you have received your confirmation email.

Once you have logged in, complete your claim details by answering all sections and include your supporting documents, such as receipts, reports and proof of ownership. RAA will be in touch if you need to supply any further evidence to support your claim.

When having the optional cover for rental car excess in my comprehensive car insurance, how do I make a claim in the event of having an accident whilst driving a rental car?

I can’t seem to find the appropriate form that recognises this event.
