Our verdict: RAA Travel has particularly high benefit limits, including $10m legal liability and $8,000 rental car excess cover. It also offers cover for motorbikes and scooters as standard.
RAA Travel Insurance provides high benefit limits including $8,000 rental car excess cover.
Moped and motorbike cover is included as standard, however, adventure sports are largely excluded.
Unlimited overseas medical and cancellation is included for Premium policies up to age 110.
Pros
RAA Travel Insurance offers cover for mopeds, scooters and motorbikes as standard, as long as you can meet the requirements, including having a valid Australian licence.
RAA's Premium policy has a rental car excess of $8,000 - higher than some other providers we compared..
Cons
Other than snow sports, RAA doesn't offer an adventure or activity pack, so some higher-risk sports aren't covered including outdoor rock-climbing and skydiving.
RAA has fairly high benefit limits but doesn't give travellers the option to increase them, so if you're travelling with very expensive items, you might want to look elsewhere.
RAA Travel Insurance is not currently available via Finder. You can head to the RAA website or compare alternative options available below.
RAA's Premium International policy has you covered for a range of expenses related to COVID-19, including but not limited to:
Overseas emergency medical costs if you need treatment for COVID-19 while on your trip
Cash for general expenses while in hospital due to COVID-19
Repatriation to Australia or another country if deemed medically necessary
Return travel for supervised children if you can no longer look after them
Overseas funeral costs if you die due to COVID-19
Costs incurred from having to cancel, delay or change your trip because you're diagnosed with COVID-19, a relative or business partner dies or is hospitalised due to COVID-19, or if you're a healthcare worker and your leave is cancelled due to COVID-19.
There are some scenarios that are not covered by RAA including situations where you were diagnosed with COVID-19 before heading on your trip and if you're unable to provide a doctor's diagnosis for COVID-19.

How to make an RAA Travel Insurance claim
The quickest way to make a claim from RAA Travel Insurance is by using its online claim lodgement which is available 24/7.
You will first need to register with the email address you used to purchase your policy, then set up your password once you have received your confirmation email.
Once you have logged in, complete your claim details by answering all sections. Your claim will be assessed within 10 working days and RAA will be in touch if you need to supply any further evidence to support your claim.
You can also make a travel insurance claim by calling 1300 207 365.
Here's the bottom line about RAA Travel Insurance
RAA Travel Insurance comes with a good suite of benefits as standard, including cover for expenses related to COVID-19, moped and motorbike cover, and high benefit limits.
However, customers can't set their own specific item limits so be sure to check if you're travelling with expensive goods. While there's an option to add Snow Sports Cover, travellers don't have an adventure pack option so some extreme sports might not be covered.
Your children and your grandchildren are covered for free if they are 25 years old or younger, are financially dependent on their parents, are not working full time, do not require a medical assessment, are travelling with you the whole time; and are listed on the certificate of insurance.
If they meet the criteria above and you choose the Winter Sports add-on, they'll be covered for that as well. .
You have 21 days from the date of issue of the policy to cancel. As long as you haven't started your trip and don't want to claim against your policy, you cancel and claim a refund..
You are covered for an unlimited number of trips over a 12 month period, provided that each trip is at least 250km from your home.

I have booked a three week trip to Hungary and Italy leaving Adelaide on October 19th 2015 and returning on November 6th. Recently I was diagnosed in late August 2015 as having had a minor stroke. My doctor has told me it is ok to travel but my question is about having insurance cover. Can you please advise me whether I can take out insurance cover with this preexisting medical condition and the cost of the premium?
Thank you

Hi Robert,
Thanks for your question
RAA requires that any medical condition that is not “acne, allergies, asthma, cataracts, glaucoma, coeliac disease, diabetes, glucose intolerance, ear grommets, epilepsy, gastric reflux, gout, hiatus hernia, hip/ knee replacement, hypertension, menopause, underactive/overactive thyroid” be assessed – meaning your ability to get travel insurance for your stroke will depend on RAA’s assessment of your condition.
As for your premium, we cannot advise you on the specific cost that will be given by RAA if your condition is covered. RAA’s product disclosure statement however, does state that “The amount We charge You for this insurance policy is the total amount of the premium that We calculate to cover the risk and any relevant government charges…” meaning your premium is likely to increase if you are covered for a pre-existing medical condition.
If you are enquiring about travel insurance in general, then it depends on each insurer. Most travel insurance providers will require a medical assessment to cover pre-existing medical conditions like stroke and will adjust their premiums accordingly. You can read more about getting travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions.
I hope this helps,
Maurice
