What you need to know:
- Bankwest credit cards offer base overseas travel insurance for trips of up to 31 days with an eligible Platinum card and up to 6 months with a World Mastercard.
- You don't need to activate this insurance or apply to get cover for an overseas trip - coverage is automatic once you meet eligibility and the terms and conditions.
- You can pay a premium to extend your cover and/or get more cover for issues including cancellation, rental vehicle excess insurance and existing medical conditions.
- Your spouse and dependants travelling with you can also get cover, but there are some requirements and exclusions.

I had an accommodation booking and the site has gone under and they had cancelled the booking. I had to pay a second time. It’s only $65. Is there an excess for such claims. Thanks. I booked $600 of travel on a Bank west platinum card.
Hi Fred,
Thanks for your question.
Under the International Travel Insurance policy, it states that the cover is “Unlimited, for covered events, except for travel agent’s cancellation fee, which is limited to an amount equal to the lesser of A$1,000 or 15% of the value of the travel arranged by the agent. Also, cover for the financial insolvency or financial collapse of a licensed service provider is limited to A$5,000 per person up to a maximum of A$10,000 for a family.”
It also states that “A cardholder automatically becomes eligible for this International Travel Insurance when they meet all of the following eligibility criteria: 1. they purchase a return overseas travel ticket before leaving Australia; and 2. they spend at least A$500 on their prepaid travel costs (i.e. the cardholder’s travel costs that they pay for before leaving Australia, which includes the cost of their return overseas travel ticket; and/or airport/departure taxes; and/or their prepaid overseas accommodation/travel; and/or any other of their prepaid overseas itinerary items); and 3. they pay these costs by one (or a combination) of the following methods: by charging to their eligible credit card account; and/or by redeeming their Bankwest More Reward points (excluding any points redeemed for Frequent Flyer programs); and/or by paying with redeemable travel agency flight vouchers that were obtained by converting their Bankwest More Reward points.”

Hi,
I am a Bankwest Platinum credit card holder and am planing an interstate holiday next month. I will be hiring a car from a licensed agent. If I had a car accident whilst hiring this car, is my insurance excess covered by the Bankwest policy or must my car hire be overseas?
Hi Joe,
Thanks for your question.
Unfortunately rental vehicle excess is covered under the international travel insurance policy, not the interstate one.
Cheers,
Shirley
I am a Bankwest platinum credit card holder. Is there a minimum amount to spend on return air fare for eligibility of travel insurance? I bought a return ticket from Adelaide to Malaysia and the total cost is $298. Would I be covered by Bankwest / Zurich travel insurance? Thanks
Hi Fay,
Thanks for your comment.
To be eligible for the insurance, you need to have a return overseas travel ticket, and A$500 of your pre-paid travel costs (i.e. travel costs) paid for prior to leaving Australia.
Cheers,
Shirley
Hi,
I just purchased international air tickets for my family using my bankwest platinum credit card which is in my married surname and my passport is in my maiden surname, will I be still covered for international travel insurance? What age is dependent children considered? ASAP reply please.
Thanks.
Hi Lian,
Thanks for your question.
We have a guide that covers the eligibility requirements of the Bankwest credit card complimentary insurance. According to the page, you’re automatically covered by this travel insurance when you meet the following eligibility criteria:
Your spouse and children are also eligible for cover if they meet these eligibility requirements and are travelling with you for your entire journey. I would recommend you to review the relevant Product Disclosure Statements/Terms and Conditions of your credit card or contact Bankwest for further assistance.
I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Jacob
