The American Express Westpac Altitude Black bundle's introductory offer presents more than enough points to book an overseas flight. As an example, you could use 100,000 Velocity Points to fly return from Sydney to Melbourne three times (93,000 points) in Business Class, or from Melbourne to Los Angeles in Business class (95,500 points).

While the earn rates are relatively competitive for a Velocity product, you’ll need to factor in how much you spend and where to evaluate the potential rewards you could redeem against the bundle’s very high annual fee. The lounge passes and seat upgrades can also help to offset the cost, but only if you actually use them every year.

How to apply

You can apply online in about 10 minutes and will receive a response in 60 seconds. For this two-card bundle, you submit only one application to Westpac and then your information is passed on to American Express. Before you apply, make sure you meet the eligibility requirements and have the necessary documents on hand:

If you're an existing Westpac Altitude Platinum or Black card customer, you can apply for the American Express card if you've been invited to via Online Banking, email or post. If you were invited, you should've received a promotional code which you can use to apply. If you don't have the card, you can only apply for the American Express when you also apply for the Mastercard.

Eligibility criteria

  • New customer. To be eligible for the bonus points offer, you cannot hold or have held a Westpac rewards card in the previous 12 months.
  • Residency. This card is available to permanent Australian residents.

Card benefits

  • Bonus Velocity Points. This bundle offers up to 100,000 Velocity Points when you apply by 31 March 2020 and meet the spend requirements for each card. With the Mastercard, you'll earn a bonus 80,000 Velocity Points when you spend $4,000 on eligible purchases in the first 90 days from account opening. You will get another 20,000 Velocity Points when you use the Amex card to make $3,000 worth of eligible purchases in the first 90 days.
  • Uncapped points. The American Express card offers 2 Velocity Points per $1 on eligible purchases made in a foreign currency, 1.25 Velocity Points per $1 on eligible spending in Australia and 0.5 points per $1 on eligible spending with government bodies in Australia. The Mastercard offers 0.75 Velocity Points per $1 spent on eligible purchases. Both cards have uncapped earn rates.

Rates & fees

  • Annual fees. Outside of any promotions, this bundle comes at the cost of a $499 total annual fee. $199 for the American Express card and a $250 annual fee for the Mastercard. There is also a $50 annual fee for choosing Altitude Velocity which is applied to the Mastercard account.
  • Purchase rate. The Mastercard charges a variable purchase interest rate of 20.49% p.a. and the American Express purchase rate is 20.24% p.a.
