Important Information

AIG has stopped offering travel insurance. You can use the tools below to search for a different travel insurance policy.

Our Verdict

  • AIG travel insurance asks for a standard excess payment of $100 on its international policies, and $50 on its domestic policies - this is the amount you'll need to pay out if you make a claim. Out of 20 insurance policies that our team reviewed, this was only matched by World2Cover.
  • This travel insurance brand offers round-the-clock emergency assistance on all of its plans. Through Travel Guard every policy holder can access 24-hour alarm centres, clinics and air ambulances, so you've got support when you need it most.
  • While AIG's cover limit of up to $2,500,000 for personal liability is more than some other providers, it falls behind leading insurance brands like STCI, AMEX and Fast Cover that offer a cover limit of double that amount.

Policy benefits for each plan will contain their own conditions and a maximum benefit that is payable in the event of a claim. It is crucial to have a clear understanding of these conditions before purchasing your policy.

What won't I be covered for?

Every travel insurance provider will have their own set of policy exclusions where they will not pay the benefit for a claim. These may vary between policies so it is important to be clear on the conditions to avoid any surprises in the event of a claim. Some of the main exclusions on AIG policies include.

  • Existing health conditions that have not been approved by AIG in writing.
  • Medical or dental problems that the policy owner was informed they would not be covered for at the time of application.
  • Claims arising for strike, riot or bad weather where policyholder failed to observe warnings from government or mass media.
  • Change of travel plans due to travelling companion decision to cancel trip.
  • Claims from business or employment not enabling traveller to take leave for trip.
  • Claims stemming from events where policy owner has failed to comply with ticket conditions.
  • Claims for cancellation of tours due to there not being enough people for tour to go ahead.

I wish to complete an organised professional trek/climb to 6189m in Nepal. The last 200-300m involve the use of ropes for safety purposes. What travel insurance company will cover this? If I am taken sick at that height but make my way below 6000m would I be covered? I cannot find any insurer that will accept this combination. Is there one?

      Hi David,

Thanks for your message and for visiting Finder.

The right travel insurance will protect you from the unique risks associated with traveling to Nepal and climbing to Everest base camp as well as typical losses such as:

      Emergency medical expenses and repatriation
      Cancellations and lost deposits
      Luggage delays and stolen items

The best way to start is by understanding your travel needs, what you plan to do in Nepal, and then comparing policies online.

You can review our travel insurances to Nepal and Everest Base Camp to compare and choose the insurance provider to fit your needs. Simply enter your travel details in the form to compare quotes from different brands. When you are ready, you may then click on the “Go to site” button and you will be redirected to the insurer’s website where you can proceed with the application or get in touch with their representatives for further inquiries you may have.

Please ensure you review the relevant Product Disclosure Statements/Terms and Conditions before purchasing a policy.

Hope this helps! Feel free to message us anytime should you have further questions.

      Cheers,
      Nikki

Is there an age limit for person who want to take out this travel insurance And why?

      ZubairMay 16, 2017Finder

      Hi Fecky,

Thank you for your question. You have contacted finder.com.au, a comparison and information service and not actually AIG Travel Insurance.

Generally, insurers set maximum age limits to minimize their own risk and AIG Travel Insurance does provide cover for up to 84 years old.

      Cheers,

Is the medical / hospital cover excluded by acts of terror?

      AvatarFinder
      ZubairFebruary 17, 2017Finder

      Hi Ephraim,

      Thank you for your question.

AIG does provide cover for medical and hospital cover in case of a terrorist act including the following benefits:

      – Accidental death if it occurs as a result of an accident or terrorist act including in-flight cover.
      – Loss of income if you are unable to resume work upon your return due to an accident or terrorist act overseas.
      – Overseas medical, hospital, cash in a hospital, dental and related expenses you have to pay as a result of an injury or illness (including injury arising from a terrorist act) which first occurs or becomes apparent after the issue date of your certificate of insurance.

I hope this helps. Should you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach us out again.

      Have a wonderful day!

      Cheers,
      Zubair
