Flight Centre Travel Insurance review

Learn more about Flight Centre Travel Insurance. We tackle what’s covered, what’s not and how to make a claim.

Known to many as the hub for all things travel planning, Flight Centre also provides travel insurance policies. Underwritten by Europ Assistance, a global travel insurance operator, Flight Centre delivers three levels of coverage across domestic and international policies, allowing Aussie travellers to find the right level of cover for their getaway and wallet.

Our Verdict

With 3 tiers of coverage, Flight Centre simplifies travel insurance for customers, ensuring you always understand what you're covered for. Its inclusions and optional add-ons are generous and what you'd expect to see in a standard policy, plus there's some important features like COVID-19 cover.

Pros

  • Three tiers of coverage available (bronze, silver and gold) for domestic and international policies, giving you flexibility with your coverage.
  • Several pre-existing medical conditions are automatically covered, including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, asthma and insulin resistance.
  • Ability to extend your coverage if an unforeseeable circumstance outside your control arises during your trip.

Cons

  • While it may be convenient to purchase travel insurance via Flight Centre, their policies may not offer you the best bang for your buck.

What policies does Flight Centre offer?

Flight Centre offers three tiers of travel insurance - Bronze, Silver and Gold - for both domestic and international travel. This flexibility allows you to select a policy that aligns with your travel needs. Annual and multi-trip policies are also available through Flight Centre.

Flight Centre is underwritten by Europ Assistance, a global travel insurance operator. Every policy also comes with a 21 day cooling off period, where you are able to cancel your policy and receive a full refund of your premium. Cancellations made outside this period can be partially refunded, so long as you haven't made a claim.

Each policy (excluding Bronze International policies) features a variable excess. This gives you the opportunity to select an excess amount that aligns with your budget. The excess you select will be visible on your certificate of insurance.

Optional add-on

No two travellers plan the same getaway, which is why Flight Centre offers optional add-ons to ensure customers tailor their coverage to suit their travel needs. These include:

  • Change of mind add‑on. This option covers you if you change your mind regarding your travels due to personal reasons. The change of mind add-on is designed to support expenses incurred during your initial planning, like paying deposits or booking activities. Keep in mind, this add-on is only available on the Gold plan for single trip International and Domestic policies.
  • Action pack add‑on. While certain sports are automatically covered across Flight Centre policies, this add-on covers you if you plan to partake in any action sports during your trip, such as kiteboarding or lacrosse. The Action pack add‑on is not available on the Bronze plan. Please see the PDS for a full list of automatically covered and Action Pack covered sports.
  • Winter sports add-on. For travellers looking to hit the slopes, the Winter sports add-on is a must. This provides additional coverage across a range of winter sport activities and equipment. Some of the covered activities include dog sledding, skiing, ice fishing and ice hockey. The Winter sports add-on is not available on the Bronze plan.
  • Cruise add-on. If you plan on embarking on a cruise during your trip, the Cruise add-on will ensure you're covered while aboard. Coverage includes cabin confinement, missed cruise departure, missed port and missed shore excursion. This option is only available on International Silver or Gold plans.

Exclusions

Every standard travel insurance policy will have its own set of exclusions. These are critical to be aware of prior to purchasing travel insurance. Some of the scenarios where you won't be covered under Flight Centre Travel Insurance include:

  • Claims arising from a pre-existing medical condition that are not in the automatically covered list.
  • Travelling against the advice of a medical practitioner.
  • Claims arising where you were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Planned travel to any country or region where there is a 'Do not travel' advisory.

This is not an exhaustive list, and it's recommended to review your PDS prior to purchasing travel insurance to ensure you fully understand what you will and won't be covered for.
