In the event of a claim, value depreciation of items or the “wear and tear” will be taken into consideration. This option allows you to register additional items to a maximum of $4,000 per item to a maximum of $10,000 in total for all items.
    • Car rental excess: If you hire a car from a rental company on your trip and are involved in an accident, Travel Insurance Direct will cover you for up to $6,000 in excess charges from the rental company. Without this option the excess limit is $4,000.

How else can I save on my travel insurance cover?

You might have access to a coupon code but there are some other tricks to save on your cover you might not be aware of. These include:

  • Determine how much cover you actually need: You may find that your trip only requires a reduced amount of cover and a basic policy is actually sufficient for your trip.
  • Purchase cover early: When you purchase travel insurance, you only pay for the period of cover selected. By purchasing early, you can enjoy complimentary cover in the event that you need to cancel your trip for unexpected events outside of your control.
  • Compare a range of options: Sure you might of heard of one brand before but neglecting to take the time and compare a range of options could mean you miss out on finding cover that is not only more suitable for your trip but also more competitively priced.

I am going to the USA for 3 weeks in March 2015. In the event I have an accident or illness and am in hospital; do I have to pay the hospital fees and then claim back?
Or do you converse with the hospital in the USA and pay the account direct?

      Hi Tim,

      Thanks for your question.

If a medial emergency comes up, you can call TID’s emergency hotline. They’ll be able to talk to everyone including your doctors, family and your local doctor.

During this period I’d assume that they’ll be able to pay the hospital direct. However, I’d recommend that you get in touch with TID to confirm this is the case.
