What do I need to do to use Citi credit card complimentary travel insurance?
If you're planning a trip and want cover through your Citi credit card, you'll need to meet the following requirements:
Australian resident. You need to be permanently living in Australia at the time you book your trip and also need to depart from Australia.

Pay for the overseas travel ticket with your eligible Citi credit card.
Book through the Citi Travel Program.
Use frequent flyer points to book your overseas travel ticket, as long as you’ve transferred a minimum of 15,000 points from your Citi card to the frequent flyer account in the past 12 months.
Length of travel. This cover is available if your trip is for 6 consecutive months or less.
Account status. You need to have an active, eligible Citi credit card in your name at the time of your booking.
The cover is automatically available to you and eligible family members (your spouse and dependants) when you meet these requirements.
But unlike some travel insurance policies, the Citi policy document does not include details of a maximum age for cover. So if you need further details or want confirmation of cover, call Allianz on 1800 072 791 (within Australia).

If you need cover for a skiing trip, bungy jumping or other overseas adventures, check out adventure sport travel insurance costs and conditions.
Does Citi credit card international travel insurance cover COVID-19?
Yes. In June 2023, Citi updated its complimentary international travel insurance with details of when you can make claims related to COVID-19 and other known pandemics and epidemics. This includes:
Overseas emergency assistance
Overseas emergency medical
Cancellation
Additional expenses
To make a claim, you need to be positively diagnosed with COVID-19 (or another pandemic/epidemic disease) and meet all the other requirements for a claim. This also extends to an eligible spouse or dependants travelling with you – but won’t apply if you’re travelling against government advice. As there are lots of conditions to meet for this type of cover, make sure you read the policy booklet or call Allianz on 1800 072 791 (within Australia) before you travel.
Does Citi credit card travel insurance cover family members?
Yes, your spouse and dependants (i.e. your children) can also get cover when you meet the eligibility requirements for international travel insurance. For them, the key requirements to get cover are:
They need to meet the same travel length and travel booking requirements as you.
They need to travel with you for at least 50% of the trip that you’ve got cover for.
They also need to meet the other conditions of the insurance policy. Keep in mind that some claims have different limits for a spouse or dependants compared to what you (as the primary cardholder) get.
Pre-existing medical conditions
With Citi’s complimentary international travel insurance, a limited number of pre-existing medical conditions are covered when you meet the requirements, including:
Pre-existing medical condition
Conditions for cover
Allergies
If you have not needed treatment by a medical adviser in the last 9 months and you don’t have a known respiratory condition (e.g. asthma).
Asthma
If you have not had an asthma attack (exacerbation) that needed treatment from a medical adviser in the past 12 months.
Coeliac disease
If your condition has not required treatment by a medical adviser in the last 6 months.
Diabetes/glucose intolerance
If you were diagnosed more than 12 consecutive months ago and have not had any complications in the last 12 consecutive months.
You also need to have a blood sugar level reading between 4 and 12 or a HbA1C score of 9% or less.
You must also not currently be undergoing treatment for kidney, eye or nerve complications.
Hypertension (high blood pressure)
If you have no known heart conditions and your current blood pressure reading is lower than 165/95.
Single pregnancy up to and including 26 weeks
If there are no existing complications related to the pregnancy and the pregnancy was not medically assisted (e.g. IVF).
⚠️ Keep in mind: Every travel insurance policy has its own definition and details about pre-existing conditions. You'll find full details in the Citi credit card complimentary travel insurance policy document.
What if I don't meet the requirements or have a different pre-existing condition?
Call Allianz on 1800 072 791 (within Australia) to check if you can use this insurance. You may be able to get written confirmation from Allianz that a pre-existing medical condition is covered, although be aware that additional fees may apply.
Otherwise, you won't get cover for any pre-existing conditions that cause issues. This includes conditions that you've had professional treatment for and untreated conditions you're aware of before you travel.
Got a pre-existing health condition? Compare other travel insurance policies that offer cover for conditions including anxiety, high blood pressure and knee replacement.
How to make a claim through your Citi credit card complimentary international travel insurance policy
If it's an emergency, call Allianz on +61 7 3305 7499 if you're overseas or 1800 072 791 if you're in Australia. Then, submit a claim as soon as possible by following these steps:
Confirm you agree with the terms and conditions, then click "Create new claim"
Select the "Credit card insurance" option and provide details of your card
Fill in the details on the claim form and upload your supporting documentation
You will hear back about your claim within 10 business days, according to the online claims website.
What to include in your claim
With insurance claims, include as many details as you can. This makes it easier for the insurer to look at the claim and your eligibility for a payout. Some examples include:
A referral or letter from a doctor or other professional you see in relation to a claim
Photo evidence
Police reports
Itinerary and tax invoices to support your claim
Tip: Use a travel wallet or create an online folder to keep all your important documents together. This could include your passport, itinerary, printed tickets, a copy of the Citi card insurance policy booklet and anything that could become supporting documentation for claims.

Citi credit card complimentary insurance for shopping
Citi credit cards also give you access to other types of insurance for items you buy. Here's a basic explainer of each one, with full details in the Citi credit card insurance policy booklet:
Purchase cover insurance: Offers cover for up to 90 days when you buy an item with your eligible card and it's then stolen, accidentally damaged or lost. It covers personal items such as laptops, shoes, jewellery and glasses, as well as eligible gifts if the person they are given to is a permanent Australian resident.
Extended warranty insurance: Cover that doubles the manufacturer's warranty for items bought in Australia, up to a maximum period of 12 months.
Mobile phone insurance
Citi is one of the few credit card brands in Australia that offer complimentary mobile phone insurance.
Unlike the other insurance covers available on eligible Citi cards, this cover is issued by AIG. Here are the key details:
What is it? If your mobile phone is stolen or accidentally damaged and stops working properly, this insurance can help cover the cost of replacement or repairs.
When can I use it? If you pay for your monthly mobile plan with an eligible Citi credit card, you can use this cover. For theft claims, you’ll need to include a police report and for damage claims, a quote for repairs as well as pictures of the damage.
Is there an excess cost? An excess of $50 applies for each claim. There is also a maximum payout of $1,000 per claim and $1,650 per year through this cover. As with other insurance, remember to read the policy document for full details.

I have a medical claim on my BOQ platinum visa card ( complimentary ). All trips , internal flights , the cruise ( $9700 ) Hawaii to Sydney were paid with that card .
The one way flight Brisbane to Hawaii ($3000 ) was paid via my visa debit card as an interim payment which our daughter reimbursed as it was a present for our 50. wedding anniversary .
Does that now mean no travel insurance is applicable because our daughter made us a very nice present ?

Hi JC,
Thanks for your question.
According to the BOQ complimentary travel insurance T&Cs: Platinum cardholders are eligible for the international travel insurance, when prior to leaving Australia their overseas travel ticket (but not taxes or airport or travel agent charges) was obtained by one of the following methods:
• the cost of the overseas travel ticket was charged to the cardholder’s card; or
• the cardholder redeemed their Q Rewards® points in exchange for the overseas travel ticket, provided that the redemption occurs, where any relevant program exists.; or
• the cardholder obtained the overseas travel ticket under the Take Flight Program.
No cover is provided under the International Travel Insurance Policy when the overseas travel tickets have been fully or partially obtained by redeeming points or rewards from schemes other than as outlined above.
By contacting Allianz Global Assistance, you’ll be able to clarify if you will be eligible given the circumstance you mentioned.

I have a Citibank rewards MasterCard and used it to pay the deposit on a cruise starting in Auckland NZ on 26th March 2017. I intend paying the balance of the fare with this card by 23rd December 2016. My wife and I will probably fly to Auckland 2 or 3 days before the cruise starts – and will use the Citibank card for that payment also. My wife will be 70 by the time we travel and I will be 72. We will disembark in Sydney on 8th April 2017.
My wife has a pacemaker and is on medication for hypertension and cholesterol. I am a type 2 diabetic (non-insulin dependent) and also take medication for hypertension and cholesterol.

Hi Lawrence,
Thank you for your question.
The complimentary travel insurance attached to the Citibank’s eligible credit card actually does not automatically cover pre-existing medical conditions, nonetheless, you can apply for additional coverage relating to a pre-existing medical condition by calling Allianz Global Assistance (AGA) on 1800 072 791.
AGA has a registered medical professional who will assess your application and, if approved, you will have to pay an administration fee. After which, you’ll be issued with a certificate outlining the additional coverage and medical condition it applies to for the journey.
Yes, it’s best that prior to your travel, you will phone AGA so that your trip will be in their records and it would be easier to claim for the insurance cover if need be.
