When you couple that with the 0% p.a. interest for 6 months on balances transfers, you’ll save enough to have some pocket money during your travels. If these perks pique your interest, then add this card to your list of those that you want to examine more closely.

Benefits of the Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card

When you shop using the Flyer credit card issued by Virgin Australia, you get to enjoy a number of unique benefits:

  • Purchase rate offer. Pay 0% p.a. interest on purchases for the first 12 months.
  • Balance transfer. No interest on your transferred balances for 0% p.a. for 6 months following activation of your card. After that introductory rate ends, the rate reverts to a 20.99% p.a.
  • Velocity Points. For the first $1,500 spent on eligible transactions, you'll earn 0.66 Velocity Points per dollar spent. An earn rate of 0.5 Velocity Points per dollar spent will apply thereafter.
  • Complimentary insurance. For travelling, transit accident insurance covers you in the event of an accidental injury or death while moving from one place to the next. This is contingent on you purchasing the tickets in advance with your Flyer credit card. You are also insured for the balance of any purchase you make where you find the same item at a lower price within 60 days.
  • Interest-free days. After your 365 interest-free days expire, you can still save with up to 44 days of no interest on purchases provided that you pay your balance in full.
  • Exclusive gift voucher each year. You will be able to enjoy an exclusive $129 Virgin Australia Gift Voucher each year – that’s your annual fee covered. All you have to do is make a retail purchase with your card within two months before requesting your voucher to unlock your benefit. You can use this when booking Virgin Australia flights or selected Virgin Australia holiday packages anytime within the first 6 months from voucher issue date.

Features of the Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card

The Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card provides the following features:

  • Annual fee. An annual fee of $129 will be charged, along with an annual fee of $39 for each additional card.
  • Cash advance fees. A domestic fee of 2.7% of the transaction amount or $2.70 is charged for cash advances of $100 or less. Upwards of $100 a fee equal to 2.7% of the amount advanced will be applied. The international cash advance fee of $5 applies for amounts of $1,000 or more withdrawn with the Velocity Flyer Credit Card.
  • Foreign exchange fee. When making purchases while travelling overseas, a fee equal to 3.3% of the transaction amount is charged. Fees charged will be reflected as a single amount on your credit card statement.
  • Overlimit fee. As long as cardholders don't exceed their credit limits, they avoid paying this fee of $0. In certain cases, clients can request that charges taking them over the limit not be processed until a later date.
  • Over-the-counter fees. Cardholders are charged 2.7% of the transaction amount or $2.70 for every transaction made over the counter at a Bank@Post office. To avoid this fee, transactions can be conducted online, by telephone or by direct debit.
  • Late payment fee. This fee is charged every seven days following a late payment. Simply ensuring that the account balance covers the minimum payment being debited will spare cardholders this fee. The late payment fee is $10 per week.
  • Card type. You get the flexibility of Visa, which is accepted around the world and online as a preferred form of payment.
  • Minimum credit limit. The credit limit for this card starts at $6,000 but can go as high as $100,000 depending on your income and credit history.

    Hi Leanne,

    Thanks for your question.

This isn’t a current benefit with this card. You might be referring to two other offers with the card that are slightly different. The bonus points offer lets you earn up to 10,000 bonus points if you apply before the cut-off date and spend $5,000 or more on retail purchases on your card within three months of card approval date. The other offer has to do with flights, whereby you can access reduced fares when you and a friend fly together on Virgin Australia saver flights up to four times a year.

    I hope this has helped.

    Thanks,

    Elizabeth

      Hi Edrick,

      Thanks for your question.

The actual application form that you’re filling out is with Virgin Australia, so any problems you have filling out the form will need to be taken up with them directly. You can try filling out the application form again, and if it still doesn’t work then you can call Virgin directly to ask what the problem might be.

      Hope this has helped.

      Thanks,

      Elizabeth

Ist it free to have an additional card holder?
Can an additional card holder be authorised to converse with Virgin over the phone about regarding the account?

      Hi Pamela,
      thanks for the question.

The minimum income for this card is $35,000 gross, and each additional cardholder comes with a fee of $39. You can authorise additional cardholders to make enquiries, but account maintenance, including changing account details, must be done by the primary cardholder.

      Cheers,
      Marc.

Hi Staff, about 2 years ago I applied for a credit card through NAB and ANZ and both times refused because of one indiscretion of a late council rate payment due to the bill being sent to an old address. Once I became aware it was paid immediately but it seems my credit rating has been tarnished since. Now long do I have to wait to return to a good credit rating? I would like to apply for a card like this but I’m not sure what the credit rating check will say and I don’t want to waste the banks and my time. Needless to say I pay my rates by direct debit these days!

I understand the minimum income has to be 35000 but is that gross or net?

      Hi, Wayne.

      Thanks for your question.

Direct debits are a great way of staying on top of your expenses. You will need to have a look at copy of your credit file. You can order a free copy, or pay a fee and get it sent express. This will allow you to see what the lender sees when they asses your credit file. It will also provide information on each type of default and how long it will remain as a listing on your credit file.

      I hope this helps.

Which option do I choose on this website to apply for the 15000 free introductory points offer

      ShirleyAugust 6, 2013Staff

      Hi Pat,

      Thanks for your comment.

You need to meet a certain criteria to be eligible. After you’ve met the criteria, then the points will automatically be added to your account.

Here is the criteria, which I’ve copied from above – “You can earn up to 15,000 bonus points when you apply for this card and spend within the first three months. According to the Virgin website, ‘Get 7,500 bonus Points when you apply by 30 June and make a retail purchase within 3 months of card approval. Get an additional 7,500 bonus Points when you spend $5,000 within 3 months of card approval.”

      Cheers,
      Shirley

I have tried on 4 occasions to fill in an application for a Velocity credit card, every time I enter the contact details of a friend the application keeps locking in 04, i put the contact mobile in but when I come to finalise the application it takes me back to this section, it won’t let me complete or send. Frustrated.

Possibly a silly question, the minimum credit card limit is $6K, does this mean I must always have at least $6000 outstanding on my credit card?
    thanks
    Joost

    • Staff
      JacobJune 11, 2013Staff

Hi Joost. Thanks for your question. The minimum credit limit is not the amount you need to have owing, but rather it’s the minimum amount of available credit you must have on your card. Let us know if this explanation makes sense. Jacob.

The travel offer is one free ticket on a Virgin Flight if you purchase the first ticket with this card (up to 4 times per year). I have a family of 6 so if I have this card and purchase 3 tickets do I get the other 3 for free if I use the card to buy the first 3?

    • Staff
      JacobJune 3, 2013Staff

Hi David. Thanks for your question. Please have a look at this page. It gives a breakdown on how the Virgin free flights offer works. The offer is calculated by giving you a half price discount on the full price of the fare and it’s valid for four flight segments in total. Two tickets would still be charged at full price. Hope this helps. Jacob.

Hi Warren. Thanks for your question. I’ve sent the travel insurance terms and conditions in a separate email. You can earn up to 15,000 bonus points when you apply for this card and spend within the first three months. According to the Virgin website, ‘Get 7,500 bonus Points when you apply by 30 June and make a retail purchase within 3 months of card approval.
