- You can cancel a recurring credit card payment by contacting the business, updating your payment details online or cancelling your account.
- If this doesn't work for some reason the next step is to contact your bank or card provider to cancel the payment.
- If someone makes a fraudulent transaction on your credit card or you don't receive the product or service you've paid for you can dispute the transaction and request a chargeback.
How do I cancel a credit card payment?
You have a few ways you can cancel or reverse a credit card payment, depending on how and when the payment is made.
- Cancelling payments that are scheduled for a future date. If you have a scheduled or recurring payment, you can usually cancel it by logging into your account and updating your payment details – or cancelling the service.
- Cancelling credit card payments for items or services you haven't received yet. If you want to cancel something like a travel booking or an online shopping order that hasn't been sent yet, contact the business directly. Depending on the cancellation policy, you may be offered a refund, store credit or another solution.
- Cancelling credit card payments for retail items. If you've already received the items, you can contact the business to ask for a refund, exchange or store credit. Note that you usually need to return an item unused to get a full refund, unless it was damaged or defective when you got it.
If you can deal with a payment cancellation via the business itself, that should be your first step. But if the merchant or service is uncontactable or isn't responding, your next step is to contact your bank or card provider. They can assist in cancelling any recurring payments. You can also request a chargeback from your bank or credit card company. This is a way of reversing a payment made with a credit or debit card. You can request a chargeback by disputing a transaction because: You can't request a chargeback for something if you paid with cash, direct debit, BPAY or a money transfer. The process for lodging a dispute varies by bank. Most banks ask you to dispute a transaction using their banking app or via an online dispute form. Some will let you provide the necessary information online, while you may need to call others. Firstly, make sure there is actually an error by going through these steps: It is your right as a consumer and account holder to dispute a variety of credit card errors that include: You will receive confirmation from the bank once they have received your request for a dispute resolution. At this point it may be necessary for you to sign a form authorising their investigation which you will need to return to the bank in a specified time frame. Once you have lodged your credit card dispute with your bank, you can expect it to go through these three stages:

Hi! My husband made a transaction with his 2 credit card and only to find out that the company he has paid to is a scam he called the bank same day and they said it hasn’t reflected yet at the bank but he must wait 5 days then he can cancel again or something. I want to know if it’s possible will that company won’t be able to get the money from the bank and what should we do. Thank you in advance.
Hi Felicia,
Thanks for your question.
Your husband may be able to request a chargeback on his credit card. This is where the bank will refund the money. The best course of action is to continue the communication with your card issuer. Among other things, if you have paid for goods or services and the merchant has failed to deliver, you’re entitled to get your money back. There are some circumstances where a chargeback may be refused.
I hope this helps.
Cheer,
Jacob
Hi.
I ordered a product online with the checkout – then after payment received – I got an email later in day that I needed to pay more postage. I can’t afford any more and said to just cancel order and refund. If they refuse to cancel, can I speak to the bank about reversing the payment. I don’t think it’s professional or ethical to be adding postage fees after the transaction is complete and finalized. Can I get a refund on that through the bank?
Thanks.
Bob.
Hi Bob,
Your first point of call should be to contact the merchant in question and get them to cancel the transaction. Provided that don’t have a ‘no-refunds’ policy, they should be able to give you your money back. If there are still issues, you will then need to contact your issuing bank and inform them of the situation.
A lender will issue a chargeback when the promised good or service has not to be delivered or has been delivered in a condition other than the advertised state. You can find out more information about credit card chargebacks.

Hi Jacob,
I purchased 12 tickets to an Australian music festival for myself, brothers and our group of friends. After I had been charged almost 2,300 I realised I had booked them to the wrong city. The city is interstate and there is no way we can afford to travel there.
I feel like I am at breaking point as I now read that the promoter does not refund tickets
Would a charge back be something that would successfully resolve this issue?
Kind regards
Brian
Hi Brian.
Contact the merchant directly. Speak to them and explain your situation and see if you can come to an arrangement.
If this fails, then contact the card issuing bank or lender. They may be able to carry out a charge-back. Charge-backs are usually reserved for instances where the goods or services are faulty or never arrives, so an instance where you bought the wrong tickets is more of a grey area. Please contact the merchant and the card issuer.
Thanks.
Jacob.
