The excess is the amount you have to pay for each incident when you make a claim. The following excesses may apply to your Suncorp policy:

  • Standard excess. This applies to all claims unless otherwise stated in the product disclosure statement (PDS).
  • Voluntary excess. You can choose to attach an additional voluntary excess to your policy in return for cheaper premiums.
  • Age excess. This excess applies if your car was being driven or used by someone under 25 years of age at the time of an incident.
  • Inexperienced driver excess. You’ll need to pay this excess if, at the time of an incident, your car was being driven or used by an inexperienced driver (someone 25 years or older who has not had a driver’s licence for the past 2 consecutive years).
  • Driver history excess. This excess is payable if your car was being driven or used by someone who had their licence cancelled, suspended, disqualified or restricted in the 3 years prior to an incident.

How to save on your Suncorp car insurance policy

You can lower your Suncorp car insurance premiums by following a few simple tips:

  • Add a voluntary excess. Adding this additional excess to your policy will allow you to enjoy reduced premiums.
  • Buy online. You can take advantage of $50 off the cost of cover when you buy comprehensive insurance online.
  • Drive less. Discounts are also available to policyholders who drive less than 10,000km per year.
  • Multi-policy discount. If you combine 3 or more eligible policies from Suncorp’s insurance range, you can receive a 15% multi-policy discount.
  • Claims-free driver rewards. The more years you go without making a claim on your Suncorp car insurance policy, the greater the discount you are entitled to.

Making a claim

When you need to make a claim on your policy, you can contact Suncorp’s claims team via phone or online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You’ll need to have details of the incident at hand to help ensure a faster claims process, and Suncorp will be able to arrange the towing of your car (if necessary) to one of its assessment centres or repair facilities.

You will also need to supply information and evidence to support your claim, such as the following:

  • The names, contact information and insurance details of anyone else involved in an accident
  • The details of witnesses to an incident
  • A police incident report number (in cases of theft)
  • In cases where you have caused property damage, any demands for compensation or notices of court action
  • Proof of ownership of your vehicle
