Allianz car insurance review

Allianz now offers two levels of comprehensive car insurance: a full-featured policy and a cheaper Essentials option built for older and second-hand cars.

Key takeaways

  • Allianz launched Comprehensive Essentials in March 2026, a stripped-back comprehensive policy aimed at older and second-hand cars, typically cheaper than its standard Comprehensive cover.
  • Standard Comprehensive gets you agreed value, choice of repairer and new car replacement in the first 2 years. Essentials is market value only, with a repairer allocated by Allianz and a fixed excess.
  • Both policies cover electric vehicles, including the battery, charging cables and wall chargers you own.

Pros

  • Two levels of comprehensive cover, so drivers of older cars can pay less by skipping features like new car replacement and agreed value.
  • You can pay your premium monthly at no extra cost.
  • Electric vehicles are covered on both policies, including your battery, charging cables and wall charger.

Cons

  • No choice of repairer for Comprehensive Essentials product, which can be a dealbreaker for certain drivers.
  • Up to Up to $1,000 worth of personal effects are covered, but many other providers offer more than this.

    Finder Score for car insurance

We analyse over 30 car insurance products across insurance providers, and rate each one for price and features. We collect up to 36 quotes per product, for male and female drivers in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia. Quotes are collected for 20 year olds, 30 year olds and 60 year olds, assuming an excess of $850 for a 2020 Toyota Corolla 4 door sedan model, with an average 15,000 kms driven each year. While we are not allowed to display actual quotes, our Finder Score aims to serve as an indicative guide to how cost and feature competitive a product might be for you.

Our feature score assesses each product for more than 15 features across loss and damage coverage, repairs and assistance coverage, personal items coverage and policy coverage. Features we assess include but are not limited to legal liability, essential repairs, new car replacement, car hire events, roadside assistance, agreed or market value, windscreen damage and natural disaster coverage.

    Why choose Allianz car insurance?

Allianz car insurance includes the following features and policy options:

    • Two tiers of comprehensive cover. Standard Comprehensive comes with the full feature set, while Comprehensive Essentials trims back the extras for a typically lower premium, which is handy if you drive an older or second-hand car.
    • New car replacement (Comprehensive only). If your car is written off within 2 years of manufacture, it can be replaced with a new vehicle of the same make and model.
    • Choice of agreed or market value. Standard Comprehensive lets you choose between agreed value (a fixed payout amount you set upfront) and market value. Essentials covers your car for market value only, which helps keep the premium down.
    • Choice of repairer (Comprehensive only). Pick your own repairer or let Allianz find one. With Essentials, Allianz allocates a repairer straight away, which can make the repair process faster.
    • Rental car after a not-at-fault accident. Both policies include a rental car for up to 30 days after a collision that wasn't your fault, or an $80-a-day allowance if a similar car isn't available. On standard Comprehensive, you can pay extra to get a rental car after any covered incident, including theft.
    • Electric and hybrid vehicle cover. Both policies cover EVs, including battery fires, accidental damage to the battery, and charging cables, wall mounts and wall chargers you own.
    • Flexible excess options (Comprehensive only). You can raise your basic excess to reduce your premium. The Essentials excess is fixed.
    • Monthly payments at no extra cost. Premiums can be paid in monthly instalments for the same total annual cost as paying upfront.
    • Lifetime guarantee on authorised repairs. Materials and workmanship on repairs Allianz authorises are guaranteed for as long as you own or lease the car, on both policies.
    • 24/7 claims. Claims can be lodged and tracked online or over the phone at any time.

    What's isn't covered?

Under Allianz car insurance, you are not covered for any loss, damage, or liability caused by or connected to the following:

    • Unlicensed driving
    • Driving under the influence
    • Unregistered or unroadworthy vehicles
    • Usage exclusions
    • Motor sports and trials
    • Intentional or malicious acts
    • Safeguarding the car
    • Consequential loss
    • Tyre damage
    • Mechanical or electrical failure
    • Computer and technology failure
    • Pollutants and contaminants
    • War, terrorism, and nuclear risks
    • Lawful seizure
    • Incidents outside Australia

How to lodge a claim online

Allianz car insurance claims can be lodged 24/7 via the online portal.

    1. Secure the scene. Ensure all parties are safe and contact emergency services if there are injuries or safety hazards.
    2. Exchange details. Collect names, contact numbers, driver's licence numbers, and registration details from any other drivers involved.
    3. Record evidence. Note the date, time, and location. Take photos of the damage and collect contact details from any witnesses.
    4. Report theft. Contact the police for incidents involving theft or malicious damage and obtain a report number.
    5. Submit online. Access the Allianz online claims tool using your policy number and personal details. No repair quotes are required at this stage.
    6. Assessment. A claims consultant will contact you within approximately two business days to provide a claim number and discuss the repair process.
