Our verdict

Pros

  • Includes up to $400 in ambulance cover following an accident
  • Roadside assistance is included with third party and comprehensive cover
  • It's for people, not profit.

Cons

  • Reduced excess windscreen cover is optional, like most other insurers
  • You need to pay extra if you want your car contents covered

How does TrueCover compare with other car insurers?

TrueCover is one of the more comprehensive car insurers on the market. It covers everything you get with a typical comprehensive policy and a bit more. For example, you don't get roadside assistance included with most insurers, and we've never seen an insurer offer ambulance cover before. This is really helpful in most Australian states (ambulances typically cost over $1,000 and aren't covered by Medicare). TrueCover's ambulance benefit will cover up to $400 of the cost and extends to all passengers at the time of the accident, not just listed drivers.

    Finder Score for car insurance

We analyse over 100 car insurance products and rate each one on price and features. What we get out the other end is a nice round number between 1 and 10 to help you start comparing.

To make sure we're comparing apples with apples, we collect quotes for 8 different personas, then work out the value of 19 different car insurance features. Our team then does some fancy maths to get the Finder Score, taking both price and features into account.

On top of standard inclusions, TrueCover has a few optional add-ons:

    • Hire car cover. If your car is involved in an incident, it will cover a hire car for up to 14 days, up to a daily rate of $50 per day. This is a similar level of coverage to other insurers, though some have a higher daily rate of around $70.
    • Car contents cover. It will cover up to $2,000 for the loss or damage to personal items during an incident. Some policies automatically include cover for personal belongings.
    • Windscreen cover. This will cover you for up to $1,000 for the repair or replacement of your front windscreen. TrueCover will reduce your excess to $50 for this.
