QBE

Pros

  • If your car is written off in the first 3 years and is under 60,000 km, QBE's comprehensive policy includes a new car replacement. This is better than other insurers that typically cap this benefit at 2 years or 40,000km.
  • It has higher benefit limits than many other insurers. Specifically, its legal liability and personal effects limits.
  • Emergency accommodation is covered for up to $1,000 - this is double some other insurers.

Cons

  • QBE is consistently one of the most expensive car insurance providers.
  • For an expensive policy, its inclusions are average. For example, it does not include roadside assistance. This would cost an additional $100 per year. Youi on the other hand does include roadside assistance and is cheaper on average.
  • QBE's product disclosure statement (PDS) includes vague details around policy limits, such as "reasonable costs". This makes it difficult to understand what monetary limits actually apply to certain benefits in the policy including towing and storage costs.

    Finder Score for car insurance

We analyse over 30 car insurance products across insurance providers, and rate each one for price and features. We collect up to 36 quotes per product, for male and female drivers in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia. Quotes are collected for 20 year olds, 30 year olds and 60 year olds, assuming an excess of $850 for a 2020 Toyota Corolla 4 door sedan model, with an average 15,000 kms driven each year. While we are not allowed to display actual quotes, our Finder Score aims to serve as an indicative guide to how cost and feature competitive a product might be for you.

Our feature score assesses each product for more than 15 features across loss and damage coverage, repairs and assistance coverage, personal items coverage and policy coverage. Features we assess include but are not limited to legal liability, essential repairs, new car replacement, car hire events, roadside assistance, agreed or market value, windscreen damage and natural disaster coverage.

    Why choose QBE car insurance?

    • Hire car – extra: A hire car for other incidents where the claim has been accepted. It's worth noting, a hire car following a not-at-fault accident is already covered as standard so this benefit refers to other circumstances where a hire car is needed.
    • No excess windscreen cover: If your windscreen needs to be replaced then you won't need to pay an excess under this option. The standard inclusion for "no excess windscreen repair" may only be valid if the windscreen can be repaired, not if it needs replacing.
    • Choice of repairer: With this optional extra, you can choose where you'd like your car to be repaired in the event of a claimable incident.
