Expert review

This is the mid-tier card in the St.George Amplify Rewards range. It has a promotional e-gift card offer, but the $3,000 spend hurdle is relatively high and the only merchant options are JB Hi-Fi, Bunnings or Flight Centre. Additional value can be derived from the complimentary travel insurance and purchase insurance covers.

How to apply

To take advantage of this offer, you can apply online. The application should only take 10 minutes and you'll receive a response within 60 seconds. Before you get started, make sure you've met the eligibility criteria and have the necessary information ready to complete the application.

Eligibility criteria

  • New cardholder. To be eligible for the gift card promotion, you must apply for a new card and cannot hold or have held an Amplify Platinum or Amplify Signature issued by St.George, Bank of Melbourne or BankSA in the previous 12 months.
  • Residency. To apply online, you must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Card benefits

  • $400 e-gift card. When you apply and are approved by 12 February 2020 you will be eligible to receive a $400 e-gift card for your choice of either JB Hi-Fi, Bunnings or Flight Centre. To qualify, you will need to spend at least $3,000 on eligible purchases within the first 90 days. Eligible purchases include most everyday spend, but exclude things like balance transfers and cash advances.
  • The Amplify Rewards program. Earn 1 point for every dollar spent on eligible purchases in Australia and overseas. Your points aren't capped and can be redeemed for travel, gift cards merchandise or frequent flyer points, including automatic conversion to Velocity at a rate of 2:1.

Rates & fees

  • Annual fee. This card charges an annual fee of $99.
  • Interest-free period. You will receive up to 55 days interest-free on new purchases when you pay your monthly payment balance listed on your statement in full by the payment due date. Note that these interest-free days are separate from any longer-term interest rate promotions and the monthly payment balance excludes current balance transfers.

    Hello

Why do you have to have an employer to have an income? What if the income threshold is exceeded with investments, savings, interest and dividends?

      Hi Chris,

      Thanks for your question.

If you don’t have an employer and would like to apply for this card as self-employed, St. George may consider your application, but you have to provide a Notice of Assessment. If you’ve been self-employed for less than a year, you won’t be able to apply.

      Cheers,
      Anndy

    Hi!

Could we choose the 30,000 bonus point between Qantas reward program or Amplify reward program when we spent $2500 for the first 90 days after we applied for the card?

      Hi Anna.

      Thank you for your inquiry.

You can choose between Amplify Rewards or Qantas Rewards with the St.George Amplify Platinum credit card as long as you spend $2,500 in eligible purchases and if your card application is approved before January 4, 2017.

      Cheers,
      Jason

I am about to travel within Australia and will be hiring a car for 5 days. Does the travel insurance attached to my card cover or reduce the excess insurance that car hire companies offer or do I need to take out extra cover when I hire the car? And, if cover is provided, what is the excess I still have to pay?

Hi Rob, thanks for your inquiry!

St.George will reimburse you up to A$5,500 for any insurance excess or deductible which you become legally liable to pay in respect of a claim under the comprehensive insurance policy of the rental vehicle during the rental period provided. You must pay the first A$250 for each claim. Please refer to page 41 of the PDF I have sent to your email on the full terms of this policy, to ensure that you are covered.

      Cheers,

      Jonathan

Hi Rick, thanks for your inquiry!

The requirements for this bonus points offer are making a first eligible purchase before 31 July 2015. Eligible purchases do not include fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, refunds or balance transfers debited from the card account. Bonus points will be transferred within three months after the first purchase transaction is debited to your account.

With Qantas Frequent Flyer programme, does one earn 1 point per $1 spent like other credit card providers, or do you offer only 1/2 a point for $1 spent?
    Thanks

Hi Ray, thanks for your inquiry!

The St. George Amplify Platinum card provides the choice between earning Amplify points or Qantas Frequent Flyers points directly. If Amplify points are chosen you will only have the choice of Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Miles, Malaysia Airlines Enrich points or Velocity Frequent Flyer Points.

      Cheers,

I have previously been a customer of St George Bank however I closed that account some time ago. I currently do not have any accounts with the St George Bank. Will I still qualify for FF points if I re-apply and I am accepted again as a customer of the St George Bank?

      Hi Bob,

      Thanks for your inquiry!

The terms and conditions does not exempt previous credit card holders from gaining the bonus Frequent flyers points.

    HI

Do the Qantas FF points accrued each month automatically get transferred to my Qantas FF account? I can supply my Qantas FF number when applying.

Also – for Balance Transfers, If I avail myself of this, do later purchases on the card still have up to 55 days interest free?

    Thanks
    Carol

Hi Carol, thanks for your inquiry.

By choosing the Amplify Qantas Rewards program when you use your card at Australian merchants, you earn half a point for each dollar that you spend. While shopping abroad, the points earned become one for every dollar. This program is also has uncapped earnings points. For Amplify Qantas, Qantas Frequent Flyer points earned in a statement cycle are transferred to the nominated Qantas Frequent Flyer account after the end of that statement cycle.

In regards to balance transfers, if any balance amount is outstanding by the end statement period this will cancel the 55 days interest free.

      I hope this helps!

      Cheers,

      Jonathan

      Hi Coco,

      Thanks for your question.

Whether you choose the Amplify Rewards program or the Amplify Qantas Rewards program, you’ll have no cap on the amount of rewards points you’re able to earn.

      I hope this has helped.

      Thanks,

      Elizabeth

    Hi,
Do I accumulate Qantas points with this card?
If I apply for a 2nd card for my husband can he link his own Qantas membership number to his card?
    Thanks,

      Hi Lynda,

      Thanks for your question.

Yes you can accumulate Qantas Points on this card. Unfortunately you can only link one Qantas FF membership to the account, so the both of you would be earning points for the one membership account.

      Cheers,
      Shirley
