What is the cheapest NBN 1000 plan?

Superloop has by far the cheapest NBN 1000 plan on Finder, especially for the first 6 months.

Get this plan for $99/mth for the first 6 months, then $109/mth. Eligibility criteria, T&Cs apply.

It's the only NBN 1000 plan on Finder to cost under $100 for the first 6 months. Even after the promotional period, Superloop's ongoing price of $109 a month keeps it as one of the cheapest options.

Kogan and Tangerine both offer cheap NBN 1000 plans too however, their typical evening speeds are about half the speed of Superloop's.

What is the fastest NBN 1000 plan?

On Finder, the fastest NBN 1000 plan comes from Telstra, with a zippy typical evening speed of 700Mbps.

Telstra NBN Ultrafast Internet

$170

This fast speed comes at a price though as Telstra also offers one of the most expensive gigabit plans on Finder.

How fast is NBN 1000?

NBN 1000 is also known as ultrafast internet, offering a maximum download speed of 1000Mbps. That's enough to run a small business.

It's 10 times faster than an NBN 100 plan, which is suitable for households of 4 or more people. That's a lot of speed.

In the ACCC's Broadband Performance Report, the fastest speed observed on these plans was around 940Mbps. In the same report, the hourly average download speeds ranged from 654Mbps to 828Mbps across the day.

NBN 1000 will be fast enough to handle multiple devices streaming 4K or even 8K video, or to upload or download large files quickly such as high-resolution video.

It's also unlikely you'll face a lag or slow speeds with online gaming, live streaming or video conferencing via Zoom or Google Meet.

Are NBN 1000 and gigabit internet the same thing?

Yes, NBN 1000 and gigabit internet mean the same thing. NBN 1000 plans offer maximum download speeds of 1000Mbps and gigabit internet is just another term for the same download speeds.

What is gigabit internet good for?

In a word: Everything. Gigabit internet should easily be able to handle the most data-hungry of tasks online without any performance issues.

A large household with multiple people online at the same time would be unlikely to face any issues. NBN 1000 would be good for streaming 8K video on several devices, downloading large files quickly and enjoying an evening of gaming without lags.

Expert tip: NBN 1000 can be an overkill for most people. Unless you have a household of 5+ heavy internet users, or you're a heavy downloader yourself, a lower speed tier should be good enough to meet most of your internet needs.

How can I get gigabit internet in Australia?

Gigabit internet or NBN 1000 plans are only available at select addresses due to your property's NBN connection type, so not everyone is able to access it.

Currently, only those with FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) or HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) connection types are eligible to get gigabit internet.

You can see which type of NBN connection you have and which plans are available to you with our address look-up.

X

Select the exact address from the list:

We also recommend checking your address on the provider's website to double-check you have access to your selected NBN 1000 plan.

Is NBN 1000 worth it?

NBN 1000 can tackle most of whatever you want to do online without any performance issues, but it may not be worth the cost if your household doesn't need that much speed.

The average cost of NBN 1000 plans in Finder's database is $136 a month. Just because it's the fastest NBN plan doesn't mean it's necessarily the best NBN plan for you.

If you have a large household of 6 or more people who all regularly use devices that perform data-intensive activities such as streaming 8K video or are constantly downloading large files, then it could be worth it.

But if you're not in that situation, you could look at getting an NBN 250 plan, which still offers high speeds but at a lower cost. An NBN 250 plan can still easily handle multiple devices streaming 4K UHD.

Whatever you decide, just know you can always move up or down a speed tier so if budget is front of mind for you, it's best to start small and then go big.

Tim Bennett

I got gigabit internet in my new apartment and it's been an absolute game changer. Super fast uploads and downloads, great quality streaming and video game streaming works like a charm. Even if you're just browsing the internet, it's amazing to have better internet than I have in my office! I ended up going with Exetel because they had the best price at the time.
