Australia Post NBN review: Our verdict

While you may know and trust Australia Post for its delivery services, it's a relatively new entrant in the broadband arena.

It offers NBN plans with unlimited data and no-lock in contracts, with prices on the majority of its NBN plans roughly equal to the average cost in Finder's database.

However, its typical evening speeds during the busy hours of the day (7-11pm) don't reach the maximum possible across any of the speed categories. This can be hard to overlook when there isn't much in the way of additional perks to make up for it.

Australia Post could be right for you if:

  • You want to bundle NBN and mobile to receive a discount. Get 10% off by bundling Australia Post's broadband and mobile services. The discount only applies on your mobile plan.

It may not be the right fit for you if:

  • You want NBN plans with high typical evening speeds. Australia Post Broadband's typical evening speeds don't land on the maximum achievable across any of its NBN plans.

Value for money

Australia Post offers plans across all existing NBN speed categories, from NBN 12 to NBN 1000.

For the NBN 12 through to NBN 100 plans, its prices are roughly in line with the average in Finder's database. However, for the NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans, its prices are more expensive than average.

You can BYO modem, but if you need to buy one from Australia Post, it will cost $149 including shipping. This is about the same as the average cost of modems on Finder.

Australia Post only offers 1 specific fixed wireless plan - the Everyday Wireless also known as NBN 75. It'll set you back $74 a month (without any discounts).

This is slightly more expensive than the average cost of similar plans on Finder ($70) but you do get decent speeds in return.

  • Good to know: If you're specifically looking for a fixed wireless NBN plan, there are other providers that can offer you cheaper alternatives.

Performance

Australia Post is not part of the ACCC broadband performance report, so the reliability of its speeds cannot be officially verified.

  • Why does this matter? The ACCC report allows customers to see which NBN providers are delivering the speeds they've advertised as a measure of reliability.

Based on its advertised typical evening speeds for NBN plans, you're unlikely to hit the maximum speed on any of its plans.

If maximum typical evening speeds are important to you, you may want to look at other providers.

  • Good to know: Maximum speed is the fastest speed you can get on an NBN speed tier. For example, NBN 100 plans come with a maximum speed of 100Mbps.

Bonus features

Australia Post's broadband plans don't offer much in the way of features, but you do get:

📞 Voice add-on

For an extra $10 a month you can add a landline phone with your Australia Post Broadband service. It includes unlimited calls to standard Australian local, national and mobile numbers.

  • Keep in mind: Australia Post Broadband doesn’t support international calls as part of the voice add-on. If you wanted to get a landline to make international calls, you won’t be able to do this with Australia Post Broadband.
