How the Finder Score helps you find a better broadband plans

We designed the Finder Score to simplify your search for the best NBN and Home Wireless plans. By analysing hundreds of options from over 40 providers, we evaluate pricing, speeds, data allowances and plan features. Each factor is weighted and combined to generate a score out of 10 — helping you quickly spot the most competitive plans on the market. Read the full breakdown.

What is a no lock-in contract NBN plan?

No lock-in contract means you're free to cancel your NBN plan at any time, without having to pay a fee for leaving.

The good news is that almost all NBN plans these days come with no lock-in contract.

Right now, Foxtel is the only provider offering contracted NBN plans, mainly because it bundles broadband with its TV and movie packages - it doesn't offer standalone NBN plans.

Why get a no-contract NBN plan?

The main reason to dodge a contract is flexibility – whether it's because you're renting, aren't sure about the plan, or simply dislike commitment.

Plus, the great thing about internet providers in Australia is that they love flexing sign-up deals where you can get big discounts that can last 4, 6 or 12 months.

That's how a lot of people end up saving money on their internet bills.

Pros

  • Flexibility to switch providers whenever you want, especially when you see a good deal
  • Great for people who are renting or staying somewhere for a short period
  • Makes it easier to trial providers and ditch ones that either have poor customer service or internet speed reliability

Cons

  • Sometimes, contracted plans will include a modem for $0 - you might miss out on perks like that with a no lock-in plan

What are the best no-contract NBN plans?

There's no one-size-fits-all approach here.

Since most NBN plans are contract-free and come with unlimited data, your choice will come down to:

The speeds you're after

If you're just browsing, checking emails or casually streaming, NBN 12 or NBN 25 should do the trick.

NBN 50 is great for everyday use or smaller households, while NBN 100 suits bigger families or heavier internet use.

After superfast or ultrafast speeds? That's where NBN 500 plans and above come in.

What NBN speed tier do I really need?

Your budget

As a rule of thumb, faster speeds usually cost more, but there's no point saving money if your internet's too slow to keep up with you.

You'll also find that the price difference between slow and fast speed tiers isn't as big as it once used to be.

Our experts choose top picks every month

If you're after a curated list, have a look at our guide to the best NBN plans, where we select our top picks for the month. Or you can check our list of the top 10 internet providers and the most popular plans that Finder users are signing up for. The list gets refreshed every month, too.

Do Telstra NBN plans come with a no lock-in contract?

There's no lock-in contract on any of Telstra's NBN plans.

  • Telstra offers NBN 25 speeds and above, internet only or with a phone line with unlimited calls.
  • Telstra gives you the option to BYO or purchase a Telstra modem on the internet only plans. If you got the plans with a phone line, Telstra will give you a modem for $0 if you're a new customer and stay connected for 24 months. If you leave early, simply return the modem or pay a $200 non-return fee.
  • Telstra's modem comes with 4G backup. In case of an NBN outage, it'll automatically connect to the 4G mobile network with download speeds capped at 25Mbps.
  • You can also earn Telstra Plus rewards points on your NBN bill to use them for rewards and other things like movie tickets.

Are TPG's plans contract-free?

Yes, TPG's NBN plans are contract-free and cover all 6 of the common NBN speed tiers:

  • You can BYO modem or buy one from TPG for $114.95.
  • You can bundle a home phone with your broadband plan and either pay as you go or add a call pack.
  • There's also a $5 a month bundling discount for mobile and broadband.

Are Optus's NBN plans contract-free?

Optus's NBN plans also don't have any lock-in contract. You can sign up to an NBN 25 plan or faster.

  • You can BYO modem or get one from Optus for $0 if you stay connected for 24 months. If you cancel early, you'll have to pay $12.75 for every month remaining.
  • Optus's modem also comes with 4G backup, which can be handy during an NBN outage. Download speeds are capped at 25Mbps.
  • $20 monthly credit on selected plans to use on streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Paramount Plus via Optus SubHub.

Do Dodo's NBN plans come with a lock-in contract?

There's no lock-in contract on any of Dodo's NBN plans.

  • You get a plan with NBN 25 speeds and faster.
  • Option to BYO modem or purchase one for $169.90. You can also spread the cost of the modem over monthly instalments.
  • Get $5 off your mobile sim plan when you bundle internet and sim with Dodo.

Are Aussie Broadband's plans no lock-in contract?

Aussie Broadband also won't lock you into a contract.

  • You'll get standard NBN speeds, with access to higher tiers such as NBN 2000, plus Australia-based customer support.
  • It also has a set of 'Pro' plans for those seeking higher upload speeds.
  • You can BYO modem or buy one for $180. Instead of paying upfront, Aussie Broadband lets you spread the cost over 12 or 24 months.
  • Option to add a home phone and get $5 a month off for bundling mobile and broadband.
