Can I get NBN 250?

Not everyone can get NBN 250. Currently, only those with FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) or HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) connection types can sign up to NBN 250 plans. NBNCo says about 61% of households are hooked up to that (as of late 2023) but it reckons it will have 90% of households hooked up by the end of 2025.

To make sure you're able to get these plans at your location, check your address on the provider's website for confirmation. You can also input your address below and we'll show you what NBN connection type you have and which plans you have access to.

If you don't have access to NBN 250 plans, check out NBN 100 plans instead. These plans are still good for a household of 4-5 people.

When our house became eligible for the fibre upgrade, I immediately took it up. We consistently get download speeds of over 250Mbps.

Is an NBN 250 plan right for me?

An NBN 250 plan is designed for large households with 5 or more people online at the same time.

In fact the April 2023 ACCC broadband performance report says NBN 250 should easily be able to handle 7 devices streaming Ultra HD content simultaneously.

  • NBN 250 is good for connecting many devices at once.
  • Streaming video on several devices. This includes having a smooth 4K experience even with multiple devices playing in Ultra HD simultaneously, or streaming 8K with perhaps 1 or 2 additional HD streams alongside.
  • Being more responsive while online gaming.
  • For downloading large files quickly.

Expert tip: You can always try a slower speed tier before committing money towards faster internet speeds that you may not even need. Most NBN providers are more than happy to upgrade you to a faster plan if you decide the one you're on just isn't cutting it.

How fast is NBN 250?

NBN 250 is the second fastest NBN speed category and offers a maximum download speed of 250Mbps.

The actual speed you get will depend on the provider you sign up and what they've advertised as their typical evening speed.

You might not see providers claiming maximum download speeds during the busy hours of the day for whatever reason including a lack of data to report on.

If you find an NBN 250 plan still doesn't meet your need for speed, there is another option that is faster still. The NBN 1000 is the fastest NBN plan available on the market, with maximum download speed of 1000Mbps.
