Depending on the level of cover you have, you can avoid public hospitals and their waiting lists when you need elective surgery. You can do this by choosing to be treated at any of the 500 private hospitals Australian Unity have an agreement with.
Australian Unity does its best to keep you with your favourite providers so you can see the doctors and specialists you want.
Hospital cover includes services like hospital accommodation, theatre fees, intensive care, Medicare recognised treatments, surgeries and the cost of medical professionals treating you.
A hospital excess is the sum of money you agree to pay upfront, that is, before you can claim any benefit on hospital treatment back. You only need to pay the excess when you go the hospital and receive care and treatment.
Most policies do not cover you for everything, meaning you’ll likely always have some out of pocket expenses. Out of pocket costs is the money that isn’t reimbursed by your insurer. It can include deductibles, coinsurance, co-payments for covered services and costs for services that your policy doesn't cover.
A waiting period is the amount of time you have to wait before you can claim on your health insurance. You can’t claim for any services or treatment you receive during a waiting period. Waiting periods apply when you begin a new private health insurance membership or if you choose to upgrade to a higher level of cover.
With Australian Unity, if you switch to a similar or lower level plan within 30 days of leaving your previous health fund, you won’t have to re-serve waiting periods that you have already completed.
Waiting periods may apply to benefits not previously included under your original cover if you upgrade your level of cover. However, you’ll still be able to get the benefits payable under your previous level of cover while you are serving the waiting period.

Accommodation and theatre fees: Generally, the hospital will bill Australian Unity and you simply need to pay the excess or co-payment that applies to your cover. That’s because Australian Unity has an agreement with the majority of private hospitals and day facilities covering you for 100% of the accommodation and most other services like theatre fees.
Participating doctors: With participating doctors, your bill will be sent straight to Medicare and Australian Unity for payment. The only reason you would receive a bill is if there is any money you still owe after Medicare and Australian Unity have paid your doctor. This will depend on your policy.
