Our verdict

Offers up to 150,000 bonus Qantas Points, complimentary insurances and 2 yearly lounge passes.

The Westpac Altitude Qantas Black Credit Card is a top-tier frequent flyer credit card that currently has one of the biggest bonus point offers on the market. If you apply as a new customer, you’ll get 90,000 bonus Qantas Points when you spend $6,000 on eligible purchases in the first 120 days, and an additional 60,000 points in your second year with the card when you spend $6,000 on eligible purchases within 120 days of your card anniversary (150,000 bonus points total). That’s enough for a return economy flight from Sydney to New York (127,000 Qantas Points plus fees and taxes), or a one-way return class flight from Sydney to Seoul (147,600 points plus fees and taxes). Keep in mind that you would have to pay the combined $370 annual fee and rewards fee twice to get all the points. But if you are already banking with Westpac, you can benefit from a discounted annual fee of $225 (including the $75 rewards fee) in the first year.

Pros

  • Up to 150,000 bonus Qantas Points
  • Complimentary insurance covers and airport lounge passes
  • Up to 1.2 Qantas Points per $1 spent

Cons

  • Offers only up to 45 days interest-free on purchases, as compared to other cards that offer up to 55 days
  • Charges a relatively high annual fee of $370 p.a (includes $75 Qantas Rewards fee)

Hi, Can I please confirm eligibility for the bonus points offer? I am currently a supplementary card holder of Westpac Altitude Qantas Black, my husband is the primary card holder. Am I still eligible for the bonus points? Thanks!

Hi Sharon,

I think supplementary cardholders would still count as current customers here but the card’s fine print doesn’t say it specifically. I suggest contacting Westpac directly to clarify.

Hi Paul,

Most things you’d buy are eligible purchases. But what’s not eligible, according to Westpac’s site is as follows: Eligible purchases do not include interest, fees and charges, cash or ATM cash advances, cash equivalent transactions, gambling transactions, a purchase from or payment to a local, state or federal government or government related agency, BPAY or similar transactions (such as Post Billpay), refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account.

Hi Team, are you aware of any balance transfer options and rates for the Qantas Black card?

Cheers!

Typically, rewards cards such as the Qantas Black don’t include balance transfer options. Having a balance transfer on a rewards card doesn’t make much sense, since the goal with a balance transfer is to pay down debt, while the goal with a rewards card is to earn points for new spending. You can compare balance transfers to find options.

Thanks for this useful information! Can I please confirm eligibility if possible? On Finder.com.au it states this is only available for new customers who haven’t held a card within the last 12 months – the Westpac site says 24 months. Would you be able to let me know which one is correct? Thank you! :)
