Can I still apply for Qantas bonus points given that I had a Citi Premiers card cancelled within 21 months?

Hi Min,

In the T&Cs, it states: Bonus Points are not generally available to Citi Cardholders who have enrolled in Citi Qantas Rewards. It also states: New Citi Premier Credit Card customers only and cannot be used in conjunction with any other offers. It might be worth contacting Citi to confirm what you might be eligible for as a previous customer? Best of luck!

Hi Min, The conditions for bonus points specify that you can’t be transferring from an existing Citi card, but don’t say that prior cardholders aren’t eligible. However, if your previous cancellation was due to late payments or other similar issues, Citi might not approve you for a new card anyway based on your previous history.

Hi Kim,

It looks like you won’t be eligible. The fine print says: “If you have previously held a Citi Premier Qantas Credit Card, you will not be eligible for this offer.”

It doesn’t specify a timeframe or whether the card was cancelled or not. You can contact Citi for clarification around that timeframe, or you may want to review some other options for Qantas points earning cards here.

I am planning to spend $5000 to pay immigration payment. Does this count as eligible purchases?

Hello sk,

If you are making an immigration visa payment directly to the government this won’t count as an eligible purchase. If you’re making a payment to a migration agent and not using BPAY, it could be eligible. But it depends how Citi interprets the payment. According to the terms and conditions: “Please note that whether or not a transaction is an Eligible Transaction will be determined based on information provided either by the merchant or the relevant financial institution (including information about the type of business conducted by the merchant). This means that, for example, spend with certain merchants may be characterised as spend with a government related entity and therefore not an Eligible Transaction, even if that merchant is not in fact a government related entity.”

I’ve just noticed that Citi has taken over my NAB. If I’m already an NAB customer and I get a Citi Credit card, am I still a “new customer” in the eyes of Citi Bank when it comes to their Qantas points eligibility?

Thanks!

Hi William, Citi’s terms and conditions don’t appear to specify this – but it is usually the case that bonus points won’t be offered to customers if they’ve had a similar bonus points offer from a related bank (NAB in this case) in the past. So if you’ve had a bonus sign-up offer from NAB, you probably wouldn’t qualify – but if you only had an NAB transaction account, you might. To find out what applies, you’ll need to ask Citi directly – you can contact Citi on 13 24 84. Hope this helps!

How long between cards do you need before you can receive the bonus QFF points? Thanks

Hi Jim,

I hope that I’ve understood your questions correctly. Once approved for the Citi Premier Qantas credit card, you’ll need to spend $4,000 within the first 90 days from card approval to receive the 100,000 bonus Qantas Points and these will be credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership account within 8 weeks of meeting the spend criteria.

You’re eligible for the 100,000 bonus Qantas Points if you have never held this card, even if you are a past or existing Citibank customer.

Cheers,

Chris
