"I took out the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Credit Card about a year ago. I was looking to switch from a Virgin Amex to a Qantas Visa, as Virgin flights were harder to redeem for US travel and Amex sometimes incurred a surcharge or wasn't accepted. The ANZ card has more bonus points on application and Visa is much more widely accepted. But the earn rate is slightly less, the ongoing annual fee is slightly more, and after you spend $7K in a month you only earn 0.5 points per $1 spent. I also found the Amex app much easier to use than the ANZ app, especially for payments. I like this card overall, but I'd like a few more perks, the removal of the half points cap for a $425 card, and an easier to use app."

Hi Leanne,
It depends on what you value more. Both the ANZ Frequent Flyer Qantas Black card and NAB Qantas Signature card offer 1 Qantas Point per $1 spend, before dropping to 0.5 points per dollar. With ANZ, the cap is higher: you can spend up to $7,500/month before the earn rate drops for the remainder of spending, whereas with the NAB card it drops from $5,000 (and you no longer earn points on spending beyond $20k per statement period).
Both come with a range of insurances, offer sign-up bonuses, and offer access to lounge passes in different ways (with ANZ you get 2 passes; with NAB you can get lounge access if your flight is delayed 60+ minutes).
The right decision for you depends on your spending habits and what you value most in their offers. Hope this helps you compare!
and its Qantas Club benefits, while the excels with its potentially higher signup bonus, earning rate of 1 point per $1 up to $5,000/month, and delayed flight lounge access. The best choice depends on individual spending habits and travel patterns, particularly whether you prioritize lounge access or a higher sign-up bonus and a slightly better earn rate on the first $5,000

Why does ANZ charge $110 extra per person ( nor mentioned in the PDF ) for rewards membership? That’s an extra $220 on top of the card ?

Hi Chris,
Is that not the $55 rewards program service fee? Which is charged per person. I thought that was included in the card annual fee (according to ANZ’s terms and conditions).

What’s class as eligible purchases?
Sarah Megginson Finder
July 27, 2025
Hi Craig,
Most types of everyday spending are counted as eligible spending: grocery shopping, petrol, restaurants, shopping, travel, flights, etc. Ineligible spending includes things like cash advances, refunds, fees, interest, balance transfers and gambling. Hope this helps!

If I have previously been an additional card holder to this card, but that is now canceled and I’m now not connected to this card, can I apply and receive all the sign up perks?

Hi Laura,
I think an additional cardholder is still considered a cardholder. But when did you cancel the card? Because ANZ defines new customer eligibility in this way: “You are not eligible for this offer if you currently hold or have held an ANZ Frequent Flyer or ANZ Rewards credit card in the last 24 months.”
So after 24 months you’re fine to apply and qualify for the bonus points offer.

I am retired along with my wife. We have access to a regular pension payment through our SMSF and this is sufficient to cover expenses for several decades. I have heard that retirees, regardless of amount of Super cannot get a card due to them not having an “Income” Before I go thru the painful process of applying for a card on line I would appreciate if you could provide some advice on this. If there is a number I should contact directly please provide that info
thanks

Hi Graeme,
It depends on the source and amount of your income, as the bank has a fiduciary responsibility to ensure you can afford repayments. Your best bet is to contact ANZ about your situation to see if you’re likely to be approved for a Frequent Flyer credit card. You can call them on 13 22 73 between 7am-11pm (AEST) 7 days a week. Best of luck!
