The Bankwest Qantas Platinum Mastercard linked to the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program lets you earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent on eligible purchases. If you don’t have plans to fly, you can also redeem your points at the Qantas Store, which has thousands of items available.

This credit card also offers complimentary travel insurance and purchase covers, interest-free days and 0% foreign transaction fees, even when shopping online. You can also save money on existing card debt with an introductory balance transfer rate of 2.99% p.a. interest for 9 months.

  • Balance transfer offer. This card offers 2.99% p.a. on balance transfers for the first 9 months. There is a minimum of $500 that you can transfer, and any unpaid balance left at the end of the 9-month period will revert to the standard variable rate of 20.49% p.a.
  • Qantas rewards program. Enjoy earning 0.5 Qantas Point per $1 spent on eligible purchases, up to 200,000 each year. These points can be used towards airfares with Qantas or Jetstar, or you can choose merchandise and gift cards from the Qantas Store. You do need to be a member of the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program to take advantage of this offer, but free membership is available if you join online.
  • 0% foreign transaction fee. This platinum card charges 0% foreign transaction fee for purchases made in another currency, allowing you to save money when you use the card overseas or when shopping online with an international retailer. Note that cash advance fees will apply if you use the card for overseas ATM withdrawals.

The extended warranty cover adds 12 months to any Australian manufacturer's warranty that comes with your goods, and the purchase price guarantee scheme allows you to claim the difference on a purchased item if you find it available at a lower price within three weeks of the transaction. Terms and conditions apply for these insurance covers, so be sure to refer to the Complimentary Credit Card Insurance booklet for more information.

I have a new Bankwest Qantas Platinum MasterCard. I am interested in the travel insurance in particular for the excess cover when hiring a vehicle. Can you please confirm that this insurance policy covers me not just when I am overseas but whilst I am travelling within Australia.

      Hi Tarmi,

      Thank you for your question.

Under the “Rental Vehicle Insurance excess” section of the PDS, it says: Allianz Global Assistance will reimburse you for any insurance excess or deductible which you become legally liable to pay in respect of a claim under the rental vehicle insurance during the rental period provided:

      1. the rental vehicle must be rented overseas from a licensed rental agency; and
      2. as part of the rental agreement you have taken rental vehicle insurance; and
      3. you have complied with all requirements of the rental organisation under the hiring agreement and of the rental vehicle insurer.

Given that condition, the rental vehicle insurance excess does not cover your trip within Australia.

      Hi Roy,

      Thanks for your comment.

Unfortunately, Bankwest is one of the credit card issuers who made changes to their reward programs in 2016, which I understand have resulted in less value for cardholders. Actually, more banks will also make updates to their rewards cards in the coming days.

With Bankwest, their Qantas Platinum MasterCard and Qantas World MasterCard were affected by these changes. Effective 4 July 2016, the rewards system and the interest-free days will be:

      Qantas Platinum MasterCard
      – Reduced earn rate from 0.75 points to 0.5 points per $1.
      – Interest-free days are cut from 55 days to 44 days.

      Qantas World MasterCard
      – Reduced earn rate from 1 point to 0.66 points per $1.
      – Interest-free days are cut from 55 days to 44 days.

You can find more information about changes to credit card reward programs here.

By the way, if you’d like to inquire if you can get back what you have paid for the annual fee, a customer service from Bankwest could give you the best advice. I’ve sent their contact details to your email.

Hi there, are the cash advance fee and cash advance rate also charged if the card account has a positive balance, ie if money is deposited onto the card to take it into ‘credit’?

    • Staff
      DebbieApril 5, 2016Staff

      Hi Sandra,

      Thanks for your inquiry.

Please note that you’ve come through, an online comparison service and not a product issuer such as Bankwest.

There will be no cash advance fee or interest rate if you are withdrawing from your own funds.

For more information, kindly check our page on things you need to know for cash advance rates.

      I hope this helps.

Hi Marc, thanks for your inquiry!

Credit card payments to BPAY are accepted with this credit card, although ATO payments do not qualify for rewards points. You can compare credit cards which earn rewards points for payments to the ATO on this page.

My wife & I have a holiday in Europe in April and are looking for credit card that has no transaction costs on foreign currency transactions. The Bankwest Qantas Platinum MasterCard looks like it suits our needs but we have a few questions:
    1. Are there any fees for a supplementary card holder?
    2. QF points – the text in the explanation on your website seems indicate 2 lots of 8000 points are on offer. Extracts follow:
‘Rewards program. Your rewards account is given an initial boost of 8,000 points when you are approved for this card.’
‘Bonus points. New customers are eligible to receive 8,000 bonus Qantas Points three months after the card has been opened, if they have charged at least $1,500 in purchases during that time.’

    many thanks…

      2. The 8,000 bonus points offer is only available once per new customer application. We have updated our content to communicate this more effectively.

      I hope this helps!

If the applicant’s only income is the Aged Pension, would he/she still be eligible for the credit card?

    • Staff
      SharonJanuary 19, 2016Staff

      Hi Diane,

      Thanks for your question.

The card doesn’t have a set minimum income requirement, instead the application is assessed on an individual basis. Bankwest consider factors such as residential history, assets, income and liabilities when reviewing applications.

      I hope this has helped.
