Our verdict

This card offers up to 100,000 bonus Qantas Points and a discounted $349 annual fee in the first year.

The Qantas Money Platinum has competitive points per $1 earn rates and travel perks including lounge invitations and a discounted companion flight offer. The card has a healthy Finder Score of 9.15, reflecting its generous bonus points offer and competitive annual fee.

If you're a new cardholder, you'll also get 60,000 bonus Qantas Points when you spend $5,000 on eligible purchases within the first 90 days from approval. And another 40,000 bonus points if you met the above spend criteria and haven’t earned Qantas Points with a credit card in the last 24 months. That’s enough for a return business class flight between Sydney and Perth (87,200 points plus fees and taxes) or a return economy class flight between Singapore and London (86,400 points plus fees and taxes).

Pros

  • Up to 100,000 bonus Qantas Points, Discounted $349 first-year annual fee
  • Up to 2 Qantas Points per $1 spent
  • 2 complimentary Qantas Lounge invitations

Cons

  • The standard $399 annual fee is relatively high
  • Anything over $10,000 in a statement period earns a lower rate of 0.5 points per $1

Where could you fly with Qantas Money Platinum's 100K bonus points?

Calculation is based on Classic Rewards redemptions and doesn't include carrier charges, taxes and fees.
Who might the Qantas Money Platinum be suited for?

  • You want a big Qantas Points boost. You can earn up to 100,000 bonus Qantas Points if you meet the spend criteria - enough to fly economy return to London or business class one way to Tokyo (plus taxes and fees).
  • You spend around $3,000 per month. The card earns 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent on eligible domestic purchases, up to $10,000 per month - after that, the earn rate drops. So it's solid if you're in that medium spend zone.
  • You fly Qantas at least once a year. You'll get 2 Qantas Club lounge invitations annually, a discounted Qantas flight once a year and international travel insurance when you book your trip on the card.
  • You clear your balance in full. With a 20.99% p.a. purchase rate, this card is more expensive than 73 other rewards cards in our database. That's roughly half the market - so unless you're paying off your balance in full each month, the rewards won't outweigh the interest.

You might want to skip it if...

  • You want a no-frills, low-fee card. This card has a $399 annual fee (discounted to $349 in the first year). If you're looking for a cheaper Qantas-branded card, the Qantas American Express Discovery has no annual fee and still earns points.
  • You carry a balance now and then. The interest rate is still high and rewards will rarely beat the cost of interest. Something like the G&C Mutual Bank Low Rate Visa (with rates around 8.99% p.a.) might save you more in the long run.
  • You don't fly Qantas often. As the name suggests, this card is tightly tied to Qantas perks. If you mix your travel or prefer flexibility, the ANZ Rewards Black or a cashback card could give you broader value.
  • You spend more than $10,000 a month. That's where the points earn cap kicks in, so big spenders might be better off with a premium card that doesn't limit its rewards - like the Qantas Amex Ultimate.
