Apia Home Insurance
Apia provides insurance for over 50s, believing that those in the prime of their lives deserve quality insurance tailored to their needs. Read on to find out if it’s right for you.
Apia has tailored policies available for apartments, assisted living and village-style residences so you only pay for what you need.
Motor burnout comes standard on all policies, which is good because most other home insurers will charge extra for it.
Flood cover is included but it’s important to note that there are certain exclusions for storm surge and earth movement that occur 72 hours after a flood. Other brands like Westpac and St.George have a more generous flood policy.
Sorry! We currently don’t have this brand on our panel. But don't fret, you can head to the Apia’s Home Insurance website or compare a bunch of other home insurance companies with Finder.
Apia offers a wide range of home insurance to cover different living situations including building insurance, contents insurance and apartment insurance. It also has landlord, village-style residence and assisted living insurance.
Some main events covered by Apia Home Insurance include:
Apia Home Insurance is issued by AAI Limited. Like with many insurers, you'll need to pay an excess and sometimes you might have to pay more than one. For example, if a storm has damaged your house and a resulting flood damages its contents, you would need to make a separate claim for each incident.
If you want more information on what's covered, you can see Apia’s product disclosure statement (PDS) and check out our guide to events that are usually covered.
Here’s the rundown of an Apia Home Insurance policy
We highlighted some benefits that Apia will cover under a home and contents policy once it’s agreed to pay out a claim from an insured event. For example, if a theft (insured event) happens at your home, you could claim the expense of replacing your locks.

Repair and rebuilding costs
Motor burnout cover
Food and medication spoilage
Debit or credit card theft
Visitor's contents
Temporary accommodation
Trees, plants and shrubs
Optional add-ons
Apia Home Insurance offers a few optional extras so you can customise your policy. You can tailor your cover with these add-ons:

Here’s some information on Apia Home Insurance complaints
We looked at home insurance complaint data from the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) between July 2020 and June 2021. The data breaks down different underwriters and compares their business size to the number of complaints processed.
When comparing insurers, keep in mind that insurers with a larger market share serve more customers, so can potentially get more complaints.
Here's an overview of how Apia (AAI Limited) did:
AAI Limited is categorised as a very large business which means it’s normal to see a relatively large number of complaints.
This is the same case with Insurance Australia Limited and QBE, however, you can see that AAI has a lower percentage of complaints that were resolved at the first stage of the process.
This is the bottom line about Apia
Apia has long been looking out for Australians over 50 and is a respected brand in the insurance market. Along with its standard building and contents insurance, you can also find tailored policies for those living in retirement or lifestyle villages and assisted living accommodation.
Claims can be lodged online through Apia’s claim portal. You’ll be contacted within 2 business days to progress your claim. Before you start, make sure to have the following prepared:
Your policy number (if you don’t have a paper copy, try to find it in your emails)
Details about what happened
Supporting evidence of the event including photos, invoices or receipts
Yes, Apia covers loss or damage caused by flood. There are exclusions to the cover such as actions or movements of the sea or storm surge so make sure to review them in full before making your decision.
Apia covers contents only at the insured address unless you purchase personal valuables cover which is available as an optional add-on. If you choose to add cover for personal valuables, Apia will cover you for the damage or loss of these items up to a specified amount anywhere in Australia and New Zealand.

Important information about this website
finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.
Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
