It comes with a lifetime guarantee on the workmanship of authorised repairs to your home.
It's one of the few providers to offer single item cover if you just want to insure items like your phone or laptop.
It doesn't do much in the way of discounts or sign-up offers, unlike other insurers such as Budget Direct, St.George and Westpac.
We don't currently have this brand on our panel. But don't fret! You can head to the NRMA website or compare a bunch of other home insurance companies with finder.
It comes with a 21-day cooling-off period, which is standard among most insurers. This lets you cancel within 3 weeks of taking out a policy and you won't be charged, unless you make a claim. You'll also need to pay one of the following excesses, depending on what you're claiming for: basic, earthquake and special.
If an insured event like a storm, fire or theft occurs, NRMA home insurance can help reimburse you for the following and more:
Plants, trees and shrubs
Demolishing and removing debris
Funeral expenses
Keys and locks
Locating the cause of damage
Meeting building regulations
Optional add-ons
NRMA has a fairly extensive range of optional add-ons to choose from. These include the following:
Accidental damage
Burn out of electric motors – fusion
Pet lover's pack
Valuable contents – inside your home
Portable contents
Exclusions
Like all insurers, there are some events you won't be covered for with NRMA. Your NRMA Home Insurance claim will not be paid in the following situations:
It is for rust, corrosion, depreciation or wear and tear
It is for subsidence or landslide, unless it's the result of an earthquake
It is for atmospheric conditions or extreme temperatures
It is caused by vermin or insects
It is caused by tree roots or tree lopping or felling
It is caused by acts of war or terrorism
It relates to the lawful seizure or confiscation of your home or contents
Make sure you read the NRMA home insurance PDS for a full list of exclusions. You can also find out more about what home insurance excludes here.
NRMA home insurance complaints
We looked at home insurance complaint data from the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) between July 2020 and June 2021. The data breaks down different underwriters and compares their business size to the number of complaints processed.
When comparing insurers, keep in mind that insurers with a larger market share serve more customers, so can potentially get more complaints.
Here's an overview of how NRMA (Insurance Australia Limited) did:
Insurance Australia Limited had almost 1,000 complaints but did better than other providers such as AAI Limited. It also was able to resolve a larger percentage of its complaints with its customer directly than others.
While it received fewer complaints than AAI Limited, it may not be the best for customer service. QBE Insurance (Australia) Limited received almost half.
Bottom line about NRMA home insurance
NRMA home insurance is good if you want a large insurer that's been around for a long time or if you want single item insurance, but there are insurers that offer bigger sign-up discounts elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions
If you wish to make a claim, you'll need to notify NRMA Home Insurance as soon as possible. You can make a claim online through NRMA's Self Service Centre, or you can phone 131 123 to lodge your claim over the phone. You'll need to provide your policy number, the address of the insured property and a police incident report number (if applicable).
You must co-operate fully with NRMA Home Insurance and provide any information or documentation the company deems necessary to process your claim. It's also important to remember that you should never admit fault or attempt to settle a claim against you without NRMA's permission, but you must do everything possible to prevent any further loss or damage.
When you make a claim under your NRMA Home Insurance policy, you'll need to pay an excess to contribute to the cost of your claim. Depending on your policy and the nature of your claim, you may have to pay more than one excess. The following excesses apply to NRMA Home Insurance policies:
Basic
Earthquake
Special
Here's the key eligibility criteria for an NRMA home insurance policy:
The type of home you own. It must be a free standing house, townhouse, villa or duplex, semi-detached house or terrace. Registered body corporate buildings and houseboats are not eligible.
How you use the home you own. It must be your primary residence or holiday home. It's not suitable if your home is a business, such as a hotel or bed & breakfast.
The condition of your home. The home needs to meet acceptable dwelling criteria; for instance, it must be secure, watertight, structurally sound and well maintained. It's not suitable for homes under initial construction or renovations that cost more than specified in the PDS.

Important information about this website
finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.
Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
