Why we like it

We looked at plans that cost under $20 a month and found CMobile Red’s plan to be our top pick. There aren’t many options at this price point, but if you’re looking to pay very little, don’t really need much data and mostly want unlimited local calls and texts, it’s a good choice.

Pros

  • Option to contact customer support via live chat or email if you don’t want to call.
  • The plan includes unlimited international texts.

Cons

  • Make sure 3GB is enough for you. Excess data use is charged at 1 cent per MB.
  • There’s no 5G access.

Why we like it

We looked at 365-day mobile plans that cost $350 or less and found Lyca Mobile's Medium Long Term plan to be the clear winner. It works out to $12.50 a month for 30GB, which is pretty great value when you break it down over the year. Lyca Mobile also won Best Long Expiry Prepaid Mobile Provider at the 2026 Finder Mobile Awards.

Pros

  • Includes unlimited international calls to 35 selected countries.
  • Access to Vodafone’s 4G and 5G networks. Not many long-expiry plans in our database include 5G access.
  • You can rollover up to 500GB of unused data.

Cons

  • The price will revert to $240 per recharge after 360 days. The expiry length is just shy of a full year. You can easily switch to another provider for a new deal.
  • Unlike some long-expiry plans, Lyca Mobile splits its data into 30-day blocks. It’s still a generous allowance, but worth noting if your usage changes throughout the year.

Our experts give each plan a score out of 10 - totally fair, with no commercial strings attached.

How do I find the best mobile plan for seniors?

Finding the cheapest mobile plan will require you to consider a few things:

  • How much are you willing to pay? There are plenty of options for different price ranges starting as low as $5. Make sure you compare your options before deciding on one.
  • Do you need extra features? While some plans come with features such as data banking and international call inclusions, consider whether you'll actually use these. Plans with fewer bonus features will usually still offer unlimited national calls and texts, with better value for data if you need it.
  • How much data do you need? Check how much data you use by looking at your past bills or provider's online portal or app. Super low data plans don't really exist anymore so you'll want to find the cheapest plan that'll cover your needs.
  • Are you willing to sign up long term to save? Long-expiry options exist which can give you enough features to last 6–12 months. This means you won't need to top up your plan every month, as long as you haven't run out before the expiry period. These plans are usually better value over time compared to month-to-month plans since you're paying upfront for a longer period of use.

Do seniors get a discount from Telstra?

Telstra offers a $19 a month discount on its Starter mobile plan if you have a valid Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Department of Veterans' Affairs card.

It'll end up costing $31 a month for 5GB which is fairly poor value compared to regular mobile plans that run on the Telstra network. Only consider it if you need to sign up with Telstra directly.

Otherwise, check out our top picks for mobile plans that run on the Telstra network.

Vodafone seniors discount on mobile plans

Vodafone offers seniors card holders 10% off monthly plan fees on its SIM-only plans that start at $53 a month for 60GB.

Again, this is fairly expensive compared to other mobile plans in our database, including our top picks in this guide.

In fact, the starting cost of a prepaid plan from Vodafone is cheaper at $35 per 28 days for 25GB.

Does Optus have a seniors discount?

Optus doesn't offer a seniors discount. If you want to sign up, the cheapest option is its prepaid plan - $35 per 28 days for 20GB.

Or, you can check out our top picks for mobile plans that run on the Optus network instead.

TPG mobile plans for seniors

While there are no seniors plans for TPG, its plans still offer great value for money, especially for the first six months with prices being discounted by 50%.

Prices start at $25 a month for 25GB without any promos.

I am just on 64, almost retired & have a 2G mobile phone . I’ve received emails & texts saying that I have to upgrade to a 3G or 4G mobile phone by August 1st. I don’t use the phone very much. I usually get $30 Virgin credit & it lasts me for about 6 months. I would like to get a replacement (probably 4G) mobile with similar conditions. Can you advise a phone & will it still be possible to get the $30 credit so that I only get charged on the calls or texts that I make?

    Regards
    Ray

      Hello Ray!

      Thanks for the comment. :)

Please be advised that you have reached finder and we provide generic advice.

Whether buying it outright or checking your telco provider if they offer this on a cheap mobile plan is your choice. Getting into a plan may give you bigger calls and texts value, not to mention, you may qualify for some Senior’s Discount! :)

Good Luck with your choice! I know you want this to keep connected to your loved ones.

      Hope this helps.

      Cheers,
      Jonathan

      Hi Julia,

      Thank you for your inquiry.
