The Westpac Altitude Platinum Credit Card is suited to people who want flexible rewards and a competitive annual fee (for this type of card). You'll earn 75,000 bonus Altitude Points when you apply as a new cardholder and spend $3,000 or more on eligible purchases in the first 90 days. Plus 25,000 bonus points after your first eligible purchase in the second year. If you collected all the bonus points on offer, you could redeem them for around $350 in cashback on your account. Altitude Rewards also offers gift cards, retail items, travel rewards and frequent flyer point transfers to Velocity Frequent Flyer, Air New Zealand Airpoints, Asia Miles and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. But you have to log in to the Altitude Rewards website to see exactly how many points you need for most rewards.

As well as points, this card offers complimentary travel insurance and extended warranty cover for eligible purchases. You'll also save in the first year with a $49 annual fee for existing Westpac customers or a discounted annual fee of $99 for new cardholders, which goes to $175 thereafter. This annual fee is on par with similar platinum rewards cards, but you should still check that the value you’ll get from points and other perks is worth it after the first year.

How to apply

You can apply for the Altitude Platinum Credit Card by filling out the online application and receive a response within 60 seconds. To apply for this credit card, you have to make sure you meet the eligibility requirements first.

Eligibility criteria

New customer. To be eligible for the bonus points offer, you cannot hold or have held a Westpac rewards card in the previous 24 months.
Minimum income. You must earn an annual income of at least $30,000.

Residency. You must be a permanent Australian resident or Australian citizen. Please note that those holding a student visa aren't eligible and temporary visa holders must apply through migrant banking.
Age. You must be at least 18 years of age.
Existing customers. You must be an existing Westpac customer to be eligible for the $49 first-year annual fee offer.

Required documents

Proof of identification. This can be your Australian driver's licence, Medicare card or Australian passport.
Income and expenses. You'll need proof of your income and financial history, such as payslips or tax documents. You'll also need to provide information regarding any liabilities and dependents.
Employment details. You'll need to list your employer's details like the address and phone number, and proof of any other financial commitments like investment properties.

Card benefits

Up to 100,000 bonus Altitude Points. Apply for the Westpac Altitude Platinum and you'll get 75,000 bonus Altitude Points when you spend at least $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first 90 days from card approval. You'll get another 25,000 points after making your first eligible purchase in the second year. Your bonus Altitude Points will be credited to your account within 12 weeks of meeting the spend criteria.
Discounted first-year annual fee. This card offers a reduced annual fee of $99 in the first year when you apply as a new cardholder. If you're already banking with Westpac, you'll get a $49 annual fee discount in the first year. The annual fee will revert to $175 p.a. thereafter.

Rewards. With your Altitude Rewards Platinum credit card, you can earn tiered points on eligible purchases: 2 points per $1 spent on international transactions, 1.25 points per $1 spent at major supermarkets, petrol stations, dining and utilities, and 1 point per $1 spent on other eligible purchases (up to $5,000 per statement period, then the earn rate drops to 0.5 points per $1 spent thereafter).
Complimentary insurances. You get a wide range of insurance covers with your platinum credit card. You can benefit from overseas travel insurance that includes medical expenses, lost or damaged property, personal liability, and more. You'll also enjoy transit accident insurance, purchase security insurance and extended warranty coverage.
Mobile wallets. You can link your Westpac Altitude Platinum credit card with Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google Pay to make contactless payments at the checkout with your Apple, Samsung or Android device. You can also pay with your eligible fitness tracker, thanks to Garmin Pay.

Rates & fees

Annual fee. Outside of any promotions, this card charges an annual fee of $175.
Interest rates. This credit card charges a variable interest rate of 20.99% p.a. on purchases and 21.99% p.a. on cash advances.

Interest-free period. You will receive up to 45 days interest-free on new purchases when you pay your monthly payment balance listed on your statement in full by the payment due date. Note that these interest-free days are separate from any longer-term interest rate promotions and the monthly payment balance excludes current balance transfers.
Additional cardholder. You can earn points faster by adding 1 additional cardholder for $0.

Hi Lucas,

It’s a rate of 2:1 but you can only convert Altitude Points if you have a business credit card. It’s not an option for personal cards.

Hi Mants,

I believe so. The Westpac Credit Cards Complimentary Insurance booklet defines “overseas” for cover purposes in a way that doesn’t exclude cruises. You are even considered overseas on a foreign registered cruise vessel in Australian waters. I suggest checking with Westpac or reading the policy booklet closely if you’re not sure.

The main thing is to make sure your trip is eligible for cover. You need to spend at least $500 on prepaid travel costs on the card before leaving Australia, have a return travel ticket before you leave and meet other criteria.

For existing customers, is it 12 or 24 months that I cant hold a reward card with Westpac?

This is from the T&Cs of the card “Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth Classic, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Classic, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 24 months, are not eligible for this offer”

Hi Hans, Yes, if you cancelled the card you’d lose any points – the strategy in that case would be to convert your points into cashback or transfer them into a frequent flyer program before cancelling the card, so you don’t miss out. Hope this helps.
