Our verdict

Offers up to 100,000 bonus Amplify Points and a discounted annual fee of $99 in the first year, which goes to $175 after that.

The St.George Amplify Rewards Platinum is a rewards credit card with tiered earn rates, offering up to 2 points per $1 spent on eligible purchases. It also offers 75,000 bonus Amplify Points when you apply as a new cardholder and spend $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first 90 days from card approval and an additional 30,000 points after your first eligible purchase in the second year. As an example, transferring these points to Velocity Frequent Flyer would give you 50,000 Velocity Points – enough for a return economy flight from Sydney to Denpasar (46,600 points plus fees and taxes). Or, you could redeem them for up to $450 in eGift cards. The St.George Amplify Rewards website doesn’t publicly list the value of most other rewards, but redemptions start from 3,000 points.

Pros

  • Up to 100,000 bonus Amplify Points
  • $99 annual fee in the first year
  • Complimentary travel insurances

Cons

  • Charges a 3% foreign transaction fee

"I'm a keen points hunter but I also hate paying huge annual credit card fees, so when I looked for a credit card, these are two things I consider. St George Amplify Rewards Platinum ticked both my boxes because their annual card fee is on the lower side, and their earn rate is high."

What is the current conversion of rewards points to both Velocity frequent flyer points and qantas frequent flyer points respectively?

Hi Kaori,

2 Amplify Points convert to 1 Velocity Point. You can’t transfer Amplify Points to Qantas Points. You have to switch from the Amplify Rewards program to Amplify Qantas (or get an Amplify Qantas card to earn Qantas Points directly).

Hello

Why do you have to have an employer to have an income? What if the income threshold is exceeded with investments, savings, interest and dividends?

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your question.

If you don’t have an employer and would like to apply for this card as self-employed, St. George may consider your application, but you have to provide a Notice of Assessment. If you’ve been self-employed for less than a year, you won’t be able to apply.

Cheers,

Anndy

Hi!

Could we choose the 30,000 bonus point between Qantas reward program or Amplify reward program when we spent $2500 for the first 90 days after we applied for the card?

Hi Anna.

Thank you for your inquiry.

You can choose between Amplify Rewards or Qantas Rewards with the St.George Amplify Platinum credit card as long as you spend $2,500 in eligible purchases and if your card application is approved before January 4, 2017.

Cheers,

Jason

I am about to travel within Australia and will be hiring a car for 5 days. Does the travel insurance attached to my card cover or reduce the excess insurance that car hire companies offer or do I need to take out extra cover when I hire the car? And, if cover is provided, what is the excess I still have to pay?

Hi Rob, thanks for your inquiry!

St.George will reimburse you up to A$5,500 for any insurance excess or deductible which you become legally liable to pay in respect of a claim under the comprehensive insurance policy of the rental vehicle during the rental period provided. You must pay the first A$250 for each claim. Please refer to page 41 of the PDF I have sent to your email on the full terms of this policy, to ensure that you are covered.

Cheers,

Jonathan

What are the conditions to receive the 30,000 points? Is there a minimum spend required?

Hi Rick, thanks for your inquiry!

The requirements for this bonus points offer are making a first eligible purchase before 31 July 2015. Eligible purchases do not include fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, refunds or balance transfers debited from the card account. Bonus points will be transferred within three months after the first purchase transaction is debited to your account.

Cheers,

Jonathan
