RACV

Key takeaways

  • RACV provides several levels of cover ranging from Third Party Property Damage to the comprehensive 'Complete Care' policy, which includes higher limits for hire cars and automatic choice of repairer.
  • Discounts are available for customers who bundle two or more eligible insurance policies or have been RACV members for five years or more, with loyalty benefits increasing based on the length of membership.

Pros

  • Unlike many competitors that charge extra for this or choose the mechanic for you, RACV allows you to select your own repairer as a standard feature of their comprehensive policy.
  • RACV consistently ranks as the 'Most Trusted' and 'Most Loved' car insurer in Victoria (2025 Finder Satisfaction Awards), reflecting strong member loyalty and service.
  • Member Benefits: Policyholders gain access to the RACV member program, which includes discounts on fuel, entertainment, and travel.

Cons

  • As a premium provider focusing on features rather than price, RACV’s premiums are typically higher than budget-tier or online-only insurers.
  • The standard cover for personal items inside the car is capped at $500, which is lower than the $1,000+ limits offered by some other high-feature competitors.
  • Many of its top-rated service benefits and localised support are primarily tailored for and accessible to Victorian residents.

RACV is Victoria’s largest member organisation, with over 2.1 million people joining up to take advantage of its services like roadside assistance and car insurance.

    Finder Score for car insurance

We analyse over 30 car insurance products across insurance providers, and rate each one for price and features. We collect up to 36 quotes per product, for male and female drivers in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia. Quotes are collected for 20 year olds, 30 year olds and 60 year olds, assuming an excess of $850 for a 2020 Toyota Corolla 4 door sedan model, with an average 15,000 kms driven each year. While we are not allowed to display actual quotes, our Finder Score aims to serve as an indicative guide to how cost and feature competitive a product might be for you.

Our feature score assesses each product for more than 15 features across loss and damage coverage, repairs and assistance coverage, personal items coverage and policy coverage. Features we assess include but are not limited to legal liability, essential repairs, new car replacement, car hire events, roadside assistance, agreed or market value, windscreen damage and natural disaster coverage.

    Why choose RACV car insurance?

RACV is a membership scheme rather than a typical for-profit insurer, so you might be able to find more value for money with RACV than with some other providers.

    • Multi-policy discount. Policyholders may be eligible for a discount of up to 10% on their premium if they hold more than one insurance policy with RACV, such as home or contents cove.
    • Years free discount. Drivers who remain claim-free can earn a discount of up to 25% on their premium after a set period of continuous insurance.
    • Choice of repairer. Comprehensive policyholders have the option to select their own licensed repairer for vehicle repairs, rather than being restricted to a partner network.
    • Two-year new car replacement. If your car is written off in the first 2 years of its original registration, RACV will replace it with a new vehicle of the same make and model.
    • Lifetime repair guarantee. Repairs authorised by RACV are guaranteed for as long as the policyholder remains the owner of the vehicle.
    • Member benefits. Policyholders automatically become RACV members, providing access to discounts on other RACV services, travel, and retail partners.

How much does RACV car insurance cost?

To help give you an idea about RACV car insurance costs, we gathered annual quotes across their various policy types. Just remember, prices are going to change based on things like your vehicle make, model and year, where the car is parked, driver's age, claim history and your address, so it's always worth comparing policies and getting a few quotes.

What exclusions are there on RACV car insurance policies?

A range of exclusions apply. Some of the situations RACV car insurance does not cover are:

    • Tyre damage caused by road cuts, punctures, bursts or braking
    • Depreciation, rust, wear and tear and loss of value
    • A failure to properly take care of your vehicle, such as moving it to a safe place after an accident where possible, or making sure it’s locked to prevent theft
    • Driving without a licence, or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol

How do I make a claim?

To lodge a car insurance claim with RACV online, follow these steps to ensure the process is handled efficiently:

    1. Gather details. Collect the date, time, and location of the incident, plus the names, contact info, and registration numbers of everyone involved.
    2. Document damage. Take photos of the vehicles and scene. If reporting theft or vandalism, obtain a police report number first.
    3. Log in. Access the myRACV portal. You will need your policy number to register or log in.
    4. Submit claim. Complete the online form with the incident details and upload your photos or police report.
    5. Next steps. Note your claim number to track the progress or book repairs through the online portal.

        Hi Soraya,

At the time of writing, RACV doesn’t offer business car insurance to cover Uber Eats drivers. For more information about the cover you require, it’s better to visit our guide to Business Car Insurance.

You might find comprehensive policies that cover some business activities. This can include part-time food delivery. Be sure to check directly with each insurer if you have any doubts about what you’d be covered for.

        I hope this helps.

        Best,

        James

I am renting a car from Enterprise in Brisbane. I am a Canadian citizen travelling to Brisbane and Sydney for 44 days. The car rental company have covered me for liability 3rd party damage to 3rd party vehicles and property with an excess amount of $2750 Australian. I have CDW covered under my elite M/C credit card plus fire and theft and all damage to the rental car only. Only need coverage for $2750 for the liability excess. Will your excess insurance cover me for my excess used amount on 3rd party only.. I am 75 years old and my wife is 66. Could you please send me a quote for this excess insurance.
      Thanks

        Hi Denis,

Thanks for leaving a question on finder.

I’m afraid we do not currently have access to RACV car insurance brand. But its top car rental excess insurance package can cover up to $8,000, but it’s still best if you contact their consultant on 13 13 29 who can walk you through the excess options.

If you also want a car rental excess insurance which will lower the cost of your excess if you get in an accident, then you can compare policies here: https://www.finder.com.au/travel-insurance/car-rental-excess-insurance.

        Cheers,
        Joel
