What policies can I choose from?

Petinsurance.com.au offers four types of policies to meet the needs of all dog or cat owners: Dog Cover, Puppy Cover, Cat Cover and Indoor Cat Cover.

Dog cover

Dog cover provides protection for you and your dog in case of accidental injury and/or illness. Covered under the accidental injury policy are motor vehicle incidents, burns and snakebites. Both plans offer coverage for up to 80% of eligible vet bills, with a $10,000 limit for injury and illness or $10,000 for accidental injury.

Puppy cover

The first cover designed especially for puppies, Puppy Cover provides protection for you and your puppy in case of accidental injury and/or illness. Covered under the accidental injury policy are motor vehicle incidents, burns and snakebites (among others). Both plans offer coverage for up to 80% of eligible vet bills, with a $10,000 limit for injury and illness or $8,000 for accidental injury. Premiums are fixed for up to three years.

Cat cover

Cat cover is designed to provide protection for you and your cat in case of accidental injury and/or illness. Covered under the accidental injury policy are motor vehicle incidents, burns and snakebites. Both plans offer coverage for up to 80% of eligible vet bills to an annual limit of $3,000 each for the injury and illness or $3,000 for the accidental injury policy.

Indoor cat cover

Indoor cat cover is designed to provide protection for you and your cat in case of illness. Coverage under the policy includes cancer, renal disease and ingestion of a foreign object. The plan offers coverage for up to 80% of eligible vet bills to a limit of $5,000 per year.

What does accidental injury cover mean?

Your pet is eligible for accidental injury cover starting from when it is eight weeks old. Up to 80% of the costs of your vet bills are covered in case of an accidental injury caused by:

  • Motor vehicle incident
  • Burn or electrocution
  • Ingestion of a foreign object
  • An allergic reaction to an insect bite (other than tick or flea bites)

Also covered are accidental injuries which result in:

  • Broken bones
  • Poisoning
  • Snake bite toxicity
  • Soft tissue injury
  • Fight wound

Coverage excludes vet expenses resulting from pre-existing conditions, patella luxations (dislocating kneecap) and more than one incident of removing a swallowed foreign object per policy period.

What kinds of illnesses are covered?

Your pet is eligible for illness cover from Petinsurance.com.au if your pet is between eight weeks and nine years old when the cover is first started. Up to 80% of the costs of your vet bills are covered in the event your cat or dog suffers an illness, including:

  • Cancer
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease

Not covered are vet expenses incurred as a result of pre-existing conditions, endoparasites (worms) or ectoparasites (ticks, fleas, skin mites), any declared pandemic disease causing widespread illness to dogs or cats. Claims will also not be paid for treatment of the following diseases, regardless of whether or not your pet was vaccinated:

  • Infectious canine hepatitis
  • Parvo
  • Kennel cough
  • Feline leukaemia
  • All forms of cat flu
  • Calicivirus

What additional benefits are on offer?

As a Petinsurance.com.au policyholder, you also receive the following additional benefits:

  • Emergency boarding. As the pet's sole caregiver, if you are hospitalised for more than five consecutive days, the cost of the pet's stay at a licensed kennel or cattery is covered. Excluded are hospitalisations for cosmetic or elective surgeries, pregnancy or any sickness foreseen before cover starts.
  • Essential euthanasia. If a vet determines that euthanasia is the best and most humane course of action, you are covered up to the benefit limit. Not covered are non-essential euthanasia, euthanasia attributable to an excluded condition, costs for disposal, burial or cremation.
  • Paralysis tick benefit. Vet costs resulting from tick paralysis are covered (up to your sub-limit). Excluded are preventative treatments and costs resulting from bites from any other tick species.
  • Pet overseas travel insurance. In case your pet needs treatment while travelling overseas with you to destinations not requiring quarantine upon your return, you are covered up to the normal limits of your policy.

What is covered by routine care?

Petinsurance.com.au provides benefits for some routine care. If listed in your policy, you are also covered up to annual policy limits for preventative treatments such as:

  • Desexing
  • Microchipping
  • Teeth cleaning
  • Vaccination or health check
  • Flea/tick/worm control

What's not included?

As with most insurance, there are events, circumstances and conditions that are not covered by your policy. Your claim will not be paid if it is related to:

  • A pre-existing condition.
  • Dental care.
  • Regular or prescription food, vitamins, supplements, etc.
  • Preventative procedures and treatments.
  • Grooming and bathing.
  • Accessories.
  • Training, socialisation, other therapies (recommended by vet or not).
  • Treatment while dog is being used for breeding or fighting.
  • Conditions due to behavioural problems.
  • A condition where the diagnosis is inconclusive, but where the treatment is consistent with a treatment typically applied to an excluded accidental injury or illness (for example, treatment for coughing where kennel cough is suspected but not diagnosed).
  • Cell-replacement and stem cell therapy (blood transfusions are covered when medically necessary).
  • Use of non APVMA approved medications.
  • Breeding or obstetrics.
  • Transport or boarding expenses.
  • Ambulance fees.
  • After hours treatment, unless vet confirms an emergency consultation was necessary.
  • Genetic testing for breeding or genealogical purposes.
  • Transplants and prosthetics.
  • Routine exams, desexing, elective treatments.
  • Malicious acts or deliberate injury caused by you or a member of your household.
  • Your failure to take reasonable precautions to protect your pet.
