Spriggy mobile plans review

Our verdict: Spriggy is a solid choice if you want a kids’ mobile plan with parental controls, but it does cost a little more for that peace of mind.

Spriggy mobile plans: Our verdict

Spriggy is a relatively new, kid-focused mobile plan provider that runs on the Optus network. The product is an offshoot of the Sprig pocket money app that launched in 2016.

Spriggy's main claim to fame is remote parental controls on its mobile plans. Parents can turn their kids' data
on and off, manage bills and monitor call logs using their own phone.

Unfortunately, call monitoring is limited to outbound calls, so you can't see who is calling your kid.

Since Spriggy's plans are prepaid, you won't ever be charged for going over your data allowance.

These prices are much higher than average, but you're paying for Spriggy's parental controls and safety features, along with calls and data.

Overall, Spriggy's mobile plans strike a good balance between cost and parental peace of mind.

Older kids may find the data limits restrictive, especially if they spend a lot of time online gaming or are not often connected to Wi-Fi. Data top-ups are also expensive at $10 per GB.

Pros

  • Parental controls on mobile plans
  • Handy mobile app to manage your plan
  • Access to Optus's 5G network on all plans
  • Refurbished iPhones available

Cons

  • Call monitoring is outbound only
  • Data banking limits aren't great at 75GB
  • Prices could be cheaper

Spriggy's mobile coverage and speeds

Spriggy's mobile plans run on the Optus network, which covers 98.5% of the population.

You also get access to Optus's 5G network across all plans.

Optus is Australia's second-largest network after Telstra, so you can expect good coverage in cities and most regional and rural areas, with slightly less reach in very remote locations.

Download speed is capped at 150Mbps. This is fast enough for all internet activities, including streaming.

What features and perks does Spriggy offer on its mobile plans?

Spriggy's mobile plan perks and features mainly revolve around parental controls. Here's a rundown of what you get:

Parental control app

You can use the Spriggy app to turn your kid's data on and off and see their call history.

Kids can track their data use with their own Spriggy login, but they won't be able to access parental settings.

Refurbished iPhones

If your kid needs a phone, you can purchase a refurbished model from Spriggy's website. You can choose between the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.

These are standalone products that you need to buy outright - there is no option to pay off monthly.

All phones come with free shipping, a 12-month warranty and a 30-day returns policy.

Did you know?

Refurbished iPhones are pre-owned devices that have been professionally inspected and restored to full working condition. They typically look like new, but may be missing the original packaging.

Data banking

Spriggy's mobile plan comes with data banking on its plan. This allows your kid to keep any unused data, which rolls over to the following month.

While this is obviously nice to have, Spriggy Mobile has set pretty stingy limits. On its single plan, data banking is capped at 75GB, which is well below the industry standard.

You can purchase additional data at $10 per GB.

How good is Spriggy's customer service for its mobile plans?

Having launched in 2024, Spriggy is not currently listed in complaint records from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) or the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO).

Its customer service is based in Australia with offices in NSW and Queensland. Here's how you can get in touch:

  • Call on weekdays between 9am and 8pm AEST or on weekends between 10am and 6pm AEST
  • Start a live chat via the Spriggy's website

We tested Spriggy's customer service phone line and were put through to a local human almost immediately.
