Key takeaways

  • KT Insurance has specialised in RV cover for more than 30 years. Its policies are issued by QBE, so a big insurer sits behind the claims.
  • There's one level of motorhome cover. It includes agreed value, choice of repairer and new-for-old replacement if your motorhome is written off within 2 years of first registration.
  • RV-specific extras are built in. These include up to $10,000 for medical emergency transport home, emergency accommodation if a covered accident strands you more than 100km from home and one excess-free animal collision claim a year.

Our verdict

Pros

  • You choose your own repairer, ideal for Aussies who have their preferred mechanic.
  • Medical emergency cover pays up to $10,000 to get you, your family, your pet and your motorhome home if a doctor says you can't keep travelling.
  • Laid-up cover lets you cut your premium for up to 3 months a year while the van is parked at home.

Cons

  • Breakdown cover is towing only, paid back as a reimbursement (up to $600 a tow and $1,000 a year), so it's not a substitute for roadside assistance.
  • Contents cover is capped at $2,000 unless you pay for more.

Why choose KT motorhome insurance?

  • Agreed value cover. You and KT agree on what your motorhome is worth upfront, so there's no haggling over market value if it's written off.
  • New-for-old replacement. If your motorhome is written off within 2 years of first registration and you bought it new, KT will replace it with a new one of the same make and model. It also covers registration, stamp duty and dealer charges on the new vehicle for up to 12 months.
  • Choice of repairer. Use any appropriately licensed repairer. KT just needs one written quote before work starts.
  • Medical emergency assistance. Up to $10,000 per person to get you, your family, your pet and your motorhome home if a doctor says you can't continue your trip. It doesn't cover pandemic-related illness, or conditions you saw a doctor about or took medication for in the 30 days before you left.
  • Emergency accommodation. Up to $1,000 if a covered accident strands you more than 100km from home. If your motorhome is your permanent home, the distance rule drops away and the limit rises to $3,000.
  • Hire vehicle. Up to $1,000 or 14 days, whichever comes first, if repairs will take longer than 3 days or your motorhome is stolen and not found.
  • Excess-free extras. One animal collision claim a year (as long as no one else's property was damaged), your first windscreen chip repair (up to $500), your first windscreen or single glass claim, re-keying and re-coding (up to $750) and breakdown towing are all excess-free.
  • Included contents. Up to $2,000 for belongings inside your motorhome, with limits of $1,000 per item for clothing and personal items like jewellery, $500 per musical instrument and $1,000 for bikes locked to a carrier, e-bikes included.
  • Awning and annexe cover. Included in your agreed value, with a $500 excess when the awning or annexe is the only thing damaged. If it's more than 5 years old, KT may take depreciation off the payout.
  • Legal liability. Up to $20 million if you damage someone else's property or injure someone.
  • Lifetime repair guarantee. Repairs KT authorises and manages are guaranteed for as long as you own or lease the motorhome.

What isn't covered?

Like any policy, KT's motorhome cover has exclusions. You're not covered for loss, damage or liability connected to:

  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Unlicensed driving
  • Unregistered or unroadworthy vehicles
  • Mechanical or electrical failure (towing aside)
  • Rust, mould, wear and tear and failing roof or body seals
  • Gas or electrical fittings that don't meet Australian standards
  • Renting out your motorhome, including short-term bookings
  • Business use, unless KT agrees to it
  • Tyre damage from braking, punctures, cuts or bursts
  • Overloading
  • Theft when the keys were left inside or the doors and windows weren't locked
  • Intentional or criminal acts
  • Motor sports and trials
  • Consequential loss, like loss of use or income
  • Incidents outside Australia
  • Pandemics, war, and terrorism involving biological, chemical or nuclear contamination

Please note this is just a summary of exclusions. For the full list of policy exclusions, please review your PDS.

How to make a claim

KT Motorhome Insurance claims can be lodged over the phone during business hours between 8.30 am to 5.30 pm AEDT.

  1. Make sure everyone's OK and call emergency services if anyone's hurt or the scene is dangerous.
  2. Note what happened, plus the names, addresses and rego numbers of any other drivers involved. Take photos if you can.
  3. If your keys or motorhome were stolen, report it to the police and keep the report number.
  4. Call KT on 1300 261 261. Choose option 4 for claims and have your policy number ready.
  5. Send supporting documents to claims@ktinsurance.com.au.

For after hours assistance, phone 1300 261 261 and listen to the recorded message.

Broken down? You don't need a claim form for breakdown towing. Arrange and pay for the tow yourself, or call 1300 984 984 for help organising one, then send KT the receipt to be reimbursed.
