There are 4 types of motorcycle insurance available:
- Compulsory third party insurance (CTP). As the name implies, this is compulsory — you must have CTP to legally ride your motorbike in VIC and on Australian roads generally. For Victorians, CTP is included by default in your rego. So, if your bike has been registered then you already have CTP.
- Third party property damage insurance (TPPD). This cover is optional. It helps cover the cost of damage you cause to another person's vehicle or property while riding your motorcycle. It's a sensible pick if you've got a lower-value bike and are comfortable paying for your own repairs or replacement if something happens to it.
- Third party fire and theft insurance (TPFT). This cover is optional. It provides the same protection as third party property damage insurance, with added cover if your motorcycle is stolen or damaged by fire.
- Comprehensive insurance. This cover is optional. It combines the benefits of third party property damage and third party fire & theft, and also covers damage to your own motorcycle. It's a good choice if you have a high-value bike and prefer not to pay out of pocket for repairs or replacement.

What affects the cost of motorcycle insurance?
- Age: Younger riders often face higher premiums since insurers consider them a higher risk.
- Your motorcycle's engine power: Bikes with larger engines are generally more expensive to insure, as they cost more to repair and are seen as riskier on the road.
- The level of cover you choose: Comprehensive cover is typically the most expensive, but it can offer great value depending on your needs. For more affordable options, third party cover like third party property damage or third party fire & theft are worth considering.
- Your driving and claims history: If you've accumulated demerit points, insurers will view you as a higher risk, leading to increased premiums. Similarly, past claims often result in higher costs as well.
- Where you park: If you park your bike on the street, your premium will likely be higher. Storing it in a garage or carport could help reduce your costs.
- Loans: If your bike is financed or leased, it may cost more to insure.
- Your mileage: The more you ride, the higher your premium is likely to be, as more time on the road increases the risk.

"Knowing what level of cover to buy really comes down to the value of your bike and if you could afford to replace it if something happened to it. If you couldn't, or you'd be really mad about it, comprehensive cover is a safe bet. If your bike is lower value and you're not fussed by damages to it, a third party policy will likely do the trick for you."
